Caldwell Council Approves the Repaving of Brookside Avenue

The $254,400 project includes milling and paving the road, and putting in new Belgian block curbs.

Brookside Avenue will soon be a much smoother ride.

The Caldwell Council approved the nearly $254,400 project to repave Brookside Avenue and lay new curbs at its meeting on Tuesday.

Nicole Ogrosso, design engineer for the repaving project, said the project is slated to start no later than July 18. Brookside Avenue will be milled and paved from where it intersects with Westville Avenue to Runnymede Road.

In addition to milling and paving, crews will set in new Belgian block curbs along the opposite side of Grover Cleveland Park.

The project is expected to take a maximum of two months to complete, said Ogrosso. The milling and paving will need about a week to be completed, and ripping out the old curbs and setting in the Belgian blocks will take about a month.

Crews will close down Brookside Avenue to traffic and the work will be done in sections, said Ogrosso. There will be detours set up, too.

The council awarded the project to the Newark-based Granada Construction Corporation. The funds for the roadway improvement will come entirely from a New Jersey Department of Transportation grant fund.

The repaving is part of the borough’s $1.5 million project to replace water mains throughout The Cedars. The project began in the spring of 2011.

Water main projects will continue elsewhere around July 1 as the borough looks to replace water mains running through Knollwood Terrace, and Cedars and Overlook roads. Construction is expected to take about six weeks.

After the water mains are put in, the repaving of Knollwood Terrace, and Cedars and Overlook roads is expected to begin in September.
