Caldwell Farmers Market Canceled This Summer

'We do regret that the The Caldwell Farmers Market will not run this year, but we are excited for the possibilities that a fresh approach will bring to our community next year,' said Christy Berg, president of Project Main Street.

There will be no Caldwell farmers market this summer.

President Christy Berg of the nonprofit organization Project Main Street, which founded and funded the annual farmers market, announced the volunteer body will not put on the market this summer.

Berg said in a press release the decision to nix the farmers market this year was due in part to "a multitude of logistical issues that prevented the market from thriving" in 2011 and 2012.

She continued to say the nonprofit expects to revive the farmers market in the summer of 2014, hoping "with the longer planning window, we will be able to take a critical look at the possibilities for the farmers market, solicit community input, and evaluate alternatives."

The annual farmers market was traditionally held every Friday between the end of June and the beginning of October in the Smull Avenue Parking Lot behind Clearview Caldwell Cinema IV. The weekly market featured fresh produce, breads, baked goods and more from local New Jersey farmers.

Berg went on to say in the press release:

The Caldwell Farmers Market has been a fantastic addition to the life of our community and we are grateful to everyone who made it possible. We’re proud of the efforts of our volunteers who helped establish and run the market in downtown Caldwell for the past several years.

In addition to providing a venue for local farmers and specialty food vendors, the market has given our local businesses an opportunity for promotion through their participation. It has also served as center of community, bringing together residents of West Essex to enjoy live music, children’s craft projects, cooking demonstrations and special events.
