Jefferson School Holds Annual Bike Rodeo

Event teaches third graders about bike safety.

Jefferson Elementary School third graders learned about bike safety during the school's annual Bike Rodeo. Caldwell Police Officer Paul Mazzeo helped run the event, which included watching a bike safety video and navigating an obstacle course set up on the black top.  Mazzeo helped the children focus on safely riding their bikes, making turns, and using their brakes. The fun day concluded with a water and ice pop break.

Jefferson Students Learn History of Hip-Hop

Dancers of Illstyle & Peace demonstrated that by perseverance and paying attention, you can reach your highest goals

Students at Jefferson Elementary School in West Caldwell attended a lively presentation in February on the history of hip-hop dance in honor of Black History Month. The dancers of Illstyle & Peace demonstrated that by perseverance and paying attention, you can reach your highest goals. Tracing hip-hop dance styles form the late 1960s through today, this acclaimed ensemble taught positive messages, including “Think It—Do It—Become It.” The performance celebrated the art and movement of hip-hop and included a funky blend of locking, breaking, popping, tap and house dancing, vocal percussions, DJing, and modern and traditional dance forms. Jefferson Students Drop Everything and Read (Photo)

West Caldwell school marks National Education Association's Read Across America Week.

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child." —Dr. Seuss The National Education Association's Read Across America Week, a time dedicated to instill the love of reading in children, coincides each year around beloved children's author Dr. Seuss' March 2 birthday.  Jefferson Elementary School students in West Caldwell celebrated Read Across America Week (Feb. 25 through March 1) by wearing red and blue one day for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and green another day for Green Eggs and Ham.   On Wednesday, Feb. 27, students were asked to "drop everything and read" for 15 minutes. D.E.A.R. events are used to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority…

Jefferson Jaguars Display Bear Dens (Photos)

First graders create habitats of black, brown, grizzly and polar bears.

First graders at Jefferson Elementary School in West Caldwell recently completed a science unit on bears. The students studied black, brown, grizzly and polar bears in the first grade classes of Mrs. Monk, Ms. Juliano and Ms. Jarvie. As part of the unit, the students create bear dens using what they learned. They use everything from twigs and rocks to cotton balls and clay to create the habitats of their assigned bear.

'Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom' Author Visits West Caldwell

Christopher Healy talks fairy tales, creative writing and more with Jefferson students.

Christopher Healy, author of The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, visited students at Jefferson School in West Caldwell last month.  Healy spoke to students about the role classic fairy tales have played in his writing. He also discussed how to modernize a fairy tale and led third, fourth and fifth grade students through creative writing exercises.  Each student received a copy of The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, which the author autographed after his presentation.  The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom received starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and Kirkus Reviews, and was named a New York Times Notable Children’s Book for 2012.

Students Celebrate Sandy Collection With PJ Day

Jefferson Elementary School students in West Caldwell earn right to wear their pjs to school for donating to Union Beach relief efforts.

Jefferson Elementary School students participated in a special PJ Spirit Day in exchange for their generous donations toward Sandy recovery efforts in Union Beach, NJ.  Students and faculty donated clothing, food, household items and holiday gifts, as well as money, to help one of the towns hit hardest by the historic October storm. The drive was organized by fifth-grade teacher James Curran, who said he has family and friends in the area. ”It’s a small community that saw hundreds of homes destroyed and hundreds more ravaged by flooding,” Curran said. “I have a personal connection through family and friends and wanted to do all I could to try to help those in need during the holidays and beyond.” Students who made donations were encouraged…

Jefferson Students Collect Hundreds of Toys for Homeless Children

It will truly be a brighter holiday season for those staying at St. Rocco’s.

Students at Jefferson Elementary School in West Caldwell surpassed expectations with the number of toys collected for the St. Rocco’s toy drive which ends on Friday, Dec. 21. An estimated 400 toys were donated by students and their families! “At a time when we could all use a reminder of how much good there is in the world, it is heartwarming to see how many members in our Jefferson family of students, parents, faculty and staff have given so generously to those in need,” said Jefferson Principal Tim Ayers. “I feel extremely fortunate to be part of such a great community.” Coach Ken Trimmer from James Caldwell High School organized the toy drive to benefit children at the St. Rocco’s family shelter in Newark. Jefferson Students Learn Spirit of Giving

Second annual “Make-It and Take-It Event" a success.

Students at Jefferson Elementary School in West Caldwell participated in a fun and festive evening in preparation for the holidays at the second annual “Make-It and Take-It Event.”  Students had the opportunity to make beautiful handmade crafts for family and friends. Craft stations were set up in the gymnasium to create a variety of gifts which included ornaments, cookie and soup mix jars, decorated picture frames, yarn vases and magic reindeer food. Students Select Oreo Cookie in Mock Election

Jefferson Elementary School students vote for favorite snack.

Caldwell and West Caldwell students went to the polls this November and elected the Oreo cookie as their favorite snack. Jefferson Elementary School's annual mock election uses a real voting machine provided by Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin. Students were asked to pick between three candidates, Oreo, potato chips and pretzel sticks. They were invited to create campaigns for their favorites and posters were hung around the West Caldwell school. Students voted throughout the day and celebrated when the results were announced by Jefferson School Principal Timothy Ayers. Bags of the winning cookies were given to students to take home. This year's election was rescheduled from Oct. 29 to Nov. 14 because of Hurricane Sandy.

Magician Teaches Stranger Danger to Students

Jefferson Elementary School students learn that strangers look like everyday people.

John Carlson, who uses magic and ventriloquist acts to teach children about the danger of strangers, visited Jefferson Elementary School in West Caldwell earlier this month. The assembly on Stranger Danger & Safety is designed to be entertaining as well as educational. Carlson explained that strangers can look like everyday people, but are defined as “someone that you don’t know.”  He told the students that if they were ever confronted by a stranger, to run and tell their parents or school staff. He also informed students to beware of strangers who tell them to get into their cars.
