Mitt Romney than President Barack Obama in the recent presidential election cycle. Zip code 07006, which includes Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell, contributed $80,316 to Romney's campaign compared to $64,319 to Obama's campaign, according to the latest information available from the Federal Election Commission. Official results of borough council race come nearly two weeks after election.

Democrat Edward Durkin and Republican incumbent Richard Hauser waited nearly two weeks to learn Monday they won the Caldwell Council race, which was too close to call when the machine votes were counted on election night. Durkin received a total of 1,649 votes while Hauser received 1,628 votes, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said by phone Monday. Their running mates, Republican incumbent Peter Murray and Democrat Susan Vezza received 1,616 and 1,575 votes, respectively, the clerk said. The wait didn't make the win any less sweet for Durkin, 31, a lifelong Caldwell resident and first time candidate for council. But, ask a student at Lincoln Elementary School in Caldwell and you may get a totally different answer. Lincoln students went to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and elected John Adams for president over candidate Ronald Reagan. Candidates won't know results of tight council race until Monday afternoon.
More than a week after the election, Essex County officials continue to count “buckets” of votes coming in from post offices that were flooded or without power after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region, County Clerk Chris Durkin said Wednesday. In addition to mail-in votes, emailed, faxed and provisional ballots remain to be counted. Final results will not be available until the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 19, the deadline set for mail-in votes by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Early results show a Republican and Democratic split.
The Caldwell Council race was too close to call Tuesday night and might not be decided for many days. With all districts reporting, Republican incumbent Richard Hauser and Democratic candidate Edward Durkin were in the lead for the two open seats on the borough council. Hauser received 1,503 votes and Durkin had 1,500 votes, according to early results posted by the Essex County Clerk. Republican incumbent Peter Murray was in third place with 1,483 votes and Democratic candidate Susan Vezza was in fourth place with 1,446 votes. None of the candidates would concede Tuesday night. West Caldwell said "no" to change, re-electing Republican incumbents Stanley Hladik and Thomas O'Hern to the township council, according to early results posted by the Essex County Clerk's Office. The deadline for electronic voting has been extended after email and fax ballots caused headaches Tuesday throughout the state. A high volume of requests overwhelmed county officials, including in Morris where the chairman of the Morris County Board of Elections told NJ.com it may take weeks to determine the outcome of some close local elections. Morris County issues began to surface on Monday when it was discovered some information on the county clerk's website directing voters not able to get to the polls was either inaccurate or misleading, NJ.com reported.
