Operation Tie the Knot: Vote for Derek and Krystina

High school sweethearts U.S. Army Specialist Derek McConnell and his girlfriend Krystina Dressler are finalists in dream wedding giveaway.

Local sweethearts are in the running to win an engagement ring and dream wedding in Operation: Tie the Knot. U.S. Army Specialist Derek McConnell, who grew up in North Caldwell, and Krystina Dressler of Fairfield, currently have the most votes of the 10 military couples competing in an online giveaway presented by Venus Jewelers. In July 2011, while serving in Afghanistan, McConnell suffered life-threatening injuries when he stepped on two IEDs while saving the life of another soldier. Dressler has stood by the side of her wounded soldier, who suffered brain injuries, a cracked skull and jaw, internal injuries and lost both his legs. The couple met in high school six years ago. Wounded Vet Welcomed Home By Family, Community

Green Hill Avenue in Parsippany is usually a quiet street. But traffic filled the area Sunday as hundreds turned out to a homecoming party for a man they call a hero: U.S. Army Specialist Derek McConnell.  McConnell lost both his legs and part of his arm while trying to rescue his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan in July 2011. After a long recovery and rehabilitation period at Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Md., he is now back at home with his family in Parsippany. Among the many friends, family and neighbors who came to give their thanks and show their support for McConnell were Freeholder Hank Lyon, Mayor James Barberio, North Caldwell Mayor Joe Alessi, Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce, state Sen.
