The all-volunteer crew will begin working this week and patrol with regular duty officers at the West Essex Memorial Day Parade.
Seven Caldwell auxiliary officers will be joining the police force and working the streets starting this week. The newest addition to the Caldwell Police Department took their oath of office at the Caldwell Council meeting on Tuesday. These are the only auxiliary officers in the department, and Chief of Police James Bongiorno said the force was happy to have them. “This is a great group,” said Bongiorno. “You stuck in there and you all stuck with me we were able to get them through the training course this year. ... Caldwell residents may have found a letter in their mailboxes from the Caldwell Police Foundation last month and wondered, is this a new thing? The answer is “yes.” The Caldwell Police Foundation was formed recently as a way to provide needed funds for the Caldwell Police Department outside the municipal budget. “The Caldwell Police Department does not have all the equipment, programs and services that are available to other police departments,” begins the letter from foundation President Russell Bleeker. The goal, Bleeker said, is to provide local police with items that might not be affordable to the borough in light of the state’s imposed caps on municipal budgets. Chester and Rosaria Andraka found Monday morning in Parsippany.
A former Caldwell police officer and his wife were found shot to death in their Parsippany home Monday morning, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office said. Chester Andraka, 46, and his wife, Rosaria Andraka, 43, were both found shot to death in their Medford Road home Monday at about 10 a.m., according to a statement released by Acting Morris County Prosecutor Fredric Knapp. Chester "Chet" Andraka, who worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. and taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University, was a former Det./Sgt. with the Caldwell and Essex County police departments, according to his LinkedIn profile. Caldwell Police continue to seek a driver of a car who struck two pedestrians on Park Avenue and did not stop in the early morning hours of Dec. 23. Police say one pedestrian suffered a broken right lower leg and dislocated right foot and the other was grazed by the car. The hit and run occurred near the intersection of Ward Place just before 3 a.m. The vehicle is believed to be black and possibly a Honda Accord and would have damage from the impact. Anyone with information about the hit and run should contact Caldwell Police at 973-226-2600. A hit and run in West Caldwell sent a teenage girl to the hospital on New Year's Eve.

The following reports on two motor vehicle crashes in Caldwell were provided by borough police. SUV Overturned at Westville and Gould An SUV and a car collided at a Caldwell intersection on the afternoon of Dec. 31, according to Caldwell Police. Police say a black Ford Explorer heading west came across Westville Avenue when it hit the front of a black Honda Accord traveling north on Gould Place. The impact caused the SUV to overturn onto its driver’s side. The driver of the SUV climbed out of the vehicle and was checked by the West Essex First Aid Squad on the scene and released, according to police. District superintendent releases statement in reaction to mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Police officers were stationed outside schools in Caldwell and West Caldwell Friday afternoon in light of a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left more than 25 dead, including 18 children. West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall said the goal was to provide a sense of security as the frightening details unfolded about a classroom of kindergartners murdered Friday morning in Newtown. "We felt our presence would be a welcome sight to parents as they picked up their loved ones from school today," Bramhall said. Caldwell Police are participating in “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” a national effort to crack down on drinking and driving. The campaign runs from Dec. 7 through Jan. 2 with local and state law enforcement officers conducting sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols. Police believe the same man is responsible for more than 150 commercial burglaries in the last two years.
A man suspected of burglarizing five Caldwell restaurants in March has been tied to more than 150 burglaries in northern New Jersey over the last two years, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. The same man who walked off with more than $1,000 after breaking into a handful of Caldwell businesses on March 3 is believed to be responsible for burglaries all around Essex County, as well as Bergen, Passaic and Union counties, Caldwell Police Det. A 35-year-old Caldwell man has been missing since Thursday, Oct. 4, according to police. Marcos “Giacomo” Alotto left his house on foot around 11 p.m. and has not been seen or heard from since, according to a press release from the Caldwell Police Dept. Alotto's family reported him missing on Friday and say he suffers from anxiety and depression and has not taken medication in four or five months, police said. He is not believed to be suicidal. Alotto is unemployed and is from Europe. He speaks Italian and only knows some words in English. Alotto is described as 5’ 4”, 165 lbs. with brown hair and brown eyes.
