A local football rivalry turned ugly Saturday when teens from opposing high schools got in a brawl shortly after a close game. Police say a large fight broke out in the parking lot of Chipotle in West Caldwell after the James Caldwell High School varsity home game against West Essex ended with the Caldwell Chiefs losing, 17-14, in the final seconds. The death of a 69-year-old man whose body was discovered outside his home in Caldwell Monday is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. The man was found dead outside his house on Crane Street, a road that runs behind St. Aloysius Church on the northern end of town. Mother black bear and her three cubs spent Sunday foraging through residential West Caldwell neighborhood.
Four black bears spent most of Sunday foraging around a residential neighborhood of West Caldwell, according to police who warned residents to remain inside. A mother bear and her three cubs were kept under the watchful eye of the police for more than six hours until finally at about 6 p.m. they crossed a busy county road and headed toward nearby woods. Police stopped traffic so the black bears could get across Bloomfield Avenue safely. The bears then proceeded onto Henderson Drive and disappeared into a wooded area of Fairfield, Captain Gerard Paris said. “The bears, as far as we know, they are out in the woods,” Paris said Monday. Police warn residents to keep small pets and garbage indoors after a black bear sighting Tuesday.
Dana Strus did a doubletake when she looked out her window Tuesday and saw a black bear in her yard splashing around in her pool. “Nobody’s going to believe me,” thought Strus. So before reaching for the phone to call police, the North Caldwell resident grabbed her camera and stepped out onto her patio to video and photograph the wading bear so that people would know she's telling the truth. Strus, who is pregnant and due to deliver her second child Saturday, said she had just gotten back to her house on Willowbrook Drive with her 3-year-old daughter around 2 p.m. when she spotted the cub.
