Special needs children training with volunteers at Caldwell Community Center.

The loud buzzer signals "Go!" and six special needs children, many of whom have been diagnosed with autism and related learning and emotional disabilities, leap into the water and begin to swim. Personal coaches shout encouragement and remind their swimmers to use their arms and to keep kicking and pulling forward. Parents watch excitedly from the sidelines, some with tears in their eyes. "This is fantastic!” exclaims Saddle Brook resident Dawn Pallotta, mother of 8-year-old, Angelina. “A few months ago, Angelina couldn’t swim more than a few strokes, and now she is training for the 50-meter competition!” she continued.
