5 Contend for 3 Seats in West Essex School Board Election

Residents can find these candidates on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Five candidates will content for three seats on the West Essex Regional Board of Education this November.  Incumbent and president of the board David Laible will seek reelection for the only Roseland seat on the ballot. He will face Roseland challengers Deborah Calderone and Anna Gordon.  In addition, new-comers Bari Schmulewitz, Judith Amorim Dias and Argiro Doolen will vie for two North Caldwell seats.  Board members Marie Rosenberg and Diane Storey will not seek reelection for their North Caldwell positions on the regional school board.  All three seats are for three-year terms.

The senior citizen tea and spring musical preview of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" School Edition have been nominated for a 2013 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star "Theater for Everyone" Inclusion and Access Award.

West Essex Challenges Parsippany on MSG Varsity Quiz Show

High schools from tri-state area compete for $10,000 prize on "The Challenge."

West Essex High School will face Parsippany High School in round two of MSG Varsity’s The Challenge, the cable network has announced. The quiz show featuring the local high schools will air on Thursday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m., on Cablevision’s Optimum, Channel 14. West Essex is one of 47 New Jersey schools vying to qualify for the Tri-State Championship Playoffs. The West Essex team includes Jerry Groome, Ben Gersten, Tom Haversang (Captain) and Erik Maher, and alternates Michael Caggiano and Mark Mascera. The academic advisors are C.J. Rauch and Caroline Blanchard. Local Soldier Wounded in Afghanistan Dies

Death of U.S. Army Specialist Derek McConnell on Monday announced on "Team Derek" Facebook page by family.

U.S. Army Specialist Derek McConnell, who was raised in North Caldwell, died Monday, according to posts by his mother and fiance on the Facebook page “Team Derek.” McConnell, 23, was wounded in Afghanistan in July 2011, while patrolling in the Zahri District in Kandahar.  After a year of treatment in Maryland, McConnell returned to New Jersey with a hero’s welcome to live in Parsippany in late 2012. He was engaged to be married to his high school sweetheart. The cause of his death is not immediately known. “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that our hero, Derek, deployed to Heaven today,” his mother Siobhan Fuller-McConnell posted on “Team Derek.” “He fought hard right until the end. He will be missed and never forgotten.” …

West Essex Masquers Present 'Sweeney Todd'

Spring musical performances are March 21-23 at high school in North Caldwell.

The West Essex Masquers will present their spring musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, on March 21, 22 and 23. The Tony Award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler first appeared on Broadway in 1979, according to Playbill.com. The Playbill synopsis reads, “A barber who was unjustly imprisoned for years by a corrupt judge returns to England bent on revenge—a revenge that turns indiscriminately murderous, leading his resourceful accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, to bake the victims into meat pies.” Performances are at 7 p.m. in the West Essex Regional High School auditorium, 65 West Greenbrook Road in North Caldwell. North Caldwell Police Make Arrest in Rash of Car Burglaries

Police say Scotch Plains man has allegedly taken items from a number of unlocked cars parked at West Essex Regional High School over the past month.

A 19-year-old Scotch Plains man, whom police say has been entering unlocked cars in a high school parking lot and taking wallets, jewelry and other valuables, was arrested Saturday during the Essex County Basketball Tournament. William Rivera was pulled over and arrested before leaving the West Essex Regional High School parking lot after police say an employee of the school witnessed him checking car doors while he walked around the lot with a woman. Shannon Flanagan, 20, of North Caldwell, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy. Rivera faces eight counts of theft to motor vehicles for one incident which allegedly took place Saturday as well as seven others reported at the school over the past month.
