A West Caldwell man was charged with stealing a laptop from a locker at a West Caldwell gym Friday, police officials said. Matthew Raabe, 25, faces a third-degree theft charge after police say he admitted to taking a laptop from the men’s locker room at Sky Club Fitness, 750 Bloomfield Ave., on Friday morning. The owner of the laptop, a 32-year-old man from Caldwell, said the computer was taken while he was working out just before noon. The victim told police he had a lock on the locker that must have been cut off. Corporal Brian Joy and Det. Sgt. Shaun O’Dowd of the West Caldwell Police reviewed video surveillance and identified a man entering and leaving the locker room as Raabe, police said. Officers went to Raabe’s house, where police…

District superintendent releases statement in reaction to mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Police officers were stationed outside schools in Caldwell and West Caldwell Friday afternoon in light of a mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school that left more than 25 dead, including 18 children. West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall said the goal was to provide a sense of security as the frightening details unfolded about a classroom of kindergartners murdered Friday morning in Newtown.
