Cat in the Hat Visits Washington School in West Caldwell

New Jersey Education Association’s Cat in the Hat makes a special appearance ahead of Read Across America Week.

Second graders at Washington Elementary School welcomed a special guest earlier this month when New Jersey Education Association’s (NJEA’s) Cat in the Hat made a special appearance at the West Caldwell school. The students, wearing replicas of the cat’s famous hat, performed the well-known Green Eggs and Ham for the Cat, sharing stories of their favorite books and why they love to read. “I love to read,” said one second grader. “I think that Fox in Socks is my favorite.” The Cat, a retired school teacher and his retired librarian wife, volunteer with the NJEA to visit schools dressed in the “cat” costume provided by NJEA. The main focus is to foster a love of books and to encourage students to keep reading. “I selected the second graders …

CBS' John Elliot to Support Walk to Cure Diabetes

All are welcome to participate in Washington School fundraiser benefiting JDRF.

CBS 2 weatherman John Elliot will be at Washington Elementary School's Walk to Cure Diabetes this Saturday, the school's Helping Hands Committee has announced. Elliot, an area resident, will preside over the ribbon cutting at the start of the race at 10 a.m. The fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will take place in West Caldwell at James Caldwell High School’s Bonnel Field. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Pre-registration will be $25 per family, $15 per individual. The first 200 registrants will receive a water bottle and a bracelet. Registration on the day of the event will be $30 per family, $20 per individual. Washington School to Hold Walk to Cure Diabetes

Washington Elementary School's Helping Hands Committee is organizing a Walk to Cure Diabetes on Saturday, Feb. 2. The fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will take place in West Caldwell at James Caldwell High School’s Bonnel Field from 10 a.m. to noon. (Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.) Pre-registration will be $25 per family, $15 per individual. Caldwell-West Caldwell Kids Rally Against Smoking

Fourth graders write speeches and songs from lessons learned in health class.

Fourth grade students at Lincoln and Washington Schools in Caldwell and West Caldwell spent weeks learning and preparing for an Anti-Smoking Rally.  Students take information learned in Mrs. Zeman’s fourth grade health class and create speeches, songs and jingles for the rally.  The speeches and songs are meant to inspire others with a strong and creative anti-smoking message.  Are you quitting smoking in 2013 or have another New Year's Resolution? Washington School Principal Followed Procedure During Lockdown, District Says

Police ordered school lockdown after report of a possible gunshot in the area.

While parents are questioning how long it took to be notified about a lockdown at their children’s elementary school earlier this week, Caldwell-West Caldwell school officials are saying proper procedures were followed. West Caldwell Police instructed school officials to lockdown Washington Elementary School for about an hour Tuesday afternoon after receiving a report of a possible gunshot in the area. Doors were locked and children and staff members were ordered to stay in place from about 1 to 2 p.m., while police conducted an investigation. As a Washington School parent, I am happy with how the police and Mrs Adams handled the situation. It was the right thing to do and Mrs Adams (or any school principal) should not communicate with parents DURING a lockdown. Washington Students Create Holiday Cards for U.S. Military

School participates in American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

Washington Elementary School students worked hard to help lift the spirits of U.S. military members during the holidays. The students from the West Caldwell school participated in the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program, creating 1,023 handmade greeting cards to help morale. The program also provides students with lessons in compassion and citizenship. The cards will be delivered to service members by the American Red Cross. The effort was coordinated by Washington School Health and Physical Education teacher Sheila Zeman and Washington School Principal Barbara Adams.

School Custodian Charged With Theft

Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools employee has been suspended without pay.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. It does not indicate a conviction. A night custodian from Washington Elementary School in West Caldwell has been charged with petty theft and has been suspended without pay, according to sources. Lisa Ingerto, 29, of Ogdensburg (Sussex County), was arrested at the school on the night of Thursday, April 19 following a joint investigation by the West Caldwell Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. According to a letter sent home to parents by Principal Barbara Adams, West Caldwell Police were contacted in late March after small amounts of money disappeared at various times from different parts of the school. Washington Students Recognized by Essex County CASA

Fifth graders partner with organization that provides a "voice in court" for foster children.

Essex County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) celebrated their 25th anniversary of helping foster children find safe, permanent homes at the Ruby Red Shoe Ball in November at The Newark Club. Special recognition was given to Washington Elementary School, West Caldwell, for their partnership with Essex County CASA. The project provided bags containing new belongings​ for children being placed into foster care in Essex County. Led by teacher Christine Davison and principal Barbara Adams, the goal of the project was to help replace items the children were forced to leave behind in addition to giving Washington students the opportunity to learn about children in foster care.
