Caldwell, Verona and Cedar Grove Police investigating recent incidents involving potatoes.
UPDATE: The "Spudzooka" theory was debunked at least in Caldwell, where a Cedar Grove teen was charged for throwing a potato through a living room window. Residents of multiple Essex towns have reported property damaged by potatoes police believe were launched using a homemade cannon, according to officials. Three incidents of broken house windows and a damaged car where a potato was later found were reported to police in Caldwell, Cedar Grove and Verona in the last five days. Police believe the potatoes are being launched from a car that pulls up to the intended target. No injuries were reported as a result of these incidents, which appear to be random pranks. A Verona man was arrested after an altercation involving a knife at a Bloomfield Avenue business.
A 22-year-old Verona man was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly brandishing a knife at employees at the Verona Inn, police said. Thomas McMahon was arrested and charged with simple assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and defiant trespass after the Dec. 29 incident, according to police. Police responded to Verona Inn Dec. 29 on a report of an employee who was threatened with a knife, police said. An employee told police that McMahon had been asked to leave the business several times but continued to return. “After being escorted from the business the suspect then threatened the employees with the knife,” police said. William Culbertson, 22, was last heard from on Dec. 12. He has an apartment in Verona and has family in Montclair.
A Verona man, last heard from by his Montclair parents on Dec. 12, has been reported missing, according to police. William Culbertson, 22, is described as being white, 6-foot, 3-inches tall, about 275 lbs., and has blond hair and blue eyes. He is known to frequent Panera Bread in Montclair where he plays chess, according to police. Culbertson has no conspicuous marks, scars or tattoos, officials said, but four of his upper front teeth are implants and may be noticeable when he smiles. Culbertson currently lives in a small three-story apartment building on Montrose Avenue in Verona. Verona Police have been distributing fliers around the township with his photo on them. Steven James Gesumaria was issued several tickets after Nov. 26 traffic stop.
Verona police ticketed a West Caldwell man after he provided false information following a Nov. 26 traffic stop. Police said they stopped Steven James Gesumaria just after 10 p.m. and requested his driver’s license or registration for the vehicle. Gesumaria told police he did not have his driver's license or registration but provided the officer with his name and date of birth, which turned out to be false, police said. The West Caldwell resident was issued several tickets for motor vehicle violations and a complaint for providing false information to a law enforcement officer, police said.
