Students Deliver 'Dinners in a Box' to Food Pantry

Lincoln Elementary School students help make Thanksgiving dinner possible for families in need.

For many families this year, the makings of a traditional turkey dinner for the Thanksgiving holiday may be out of reach. So, to make the holiday season a bit brighter and stomachs a bit fuller for those in need, students from Lincoln Elementary School, Caldwell, held their annual food drive, collecting enough food to make 32 “dinners in a box”—a new school record. Coordinated by teachers Christina Dunne and Margot Kolator, the efforts are part of the fifth grade civics curriculum. “We try to do several community service projects each year,” said Dunne. “Our annual food drive helps the students see firsthand how even a small gesture can go a long way, especially when everyone chips in. Each year, we collect the items needed to create a …

Turkey Trot Tests Fitness, Helps Hungry

North Caldwell students combine President's Fitness Challenge with community service.

Students in North Caldwell combined physical fitness and community service last week during the fifth annual “Turkey Trot.” Gould School students completed a mile run and other activities, as part of the President’s Fitness Challenge, as well as collected food for the hungry.  They prepared in their physical education classes and achieved their personal bests in five tests: push-ups, curl ups, sit and reach (flexibility), shuttle run, and the mile run. Students and their families donated 69 frozen turkeys and nearly 300 canned goods, which were brought to the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church. The church will be distributing the donations to food banks around Essex County.

Caldwell Library Extends Food for Fines

Need is even greater in community following Hurricane Sandy, library director says.

The Caldwell Public Library is currently participating in Food for Fines. From now until Saturday, Dec. 15, library patrons can erase their outstanding library fines by making a contribution to the local food pantry. "While we've run this program in the past, we feel it's especially important in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy," Library Director Adele Puccio stated in a release. The program was originally set to run until Dec. 1 but due to the continued need in the community, the Library has extended Food for Fines until Dec. 15. For each overdue fine, bring in a non-perishable item and fines will be waived. Please make sure that all items donated are within their use dates. All items collected will be given to the Caldwell Food Pantry. "…

Food Donations Needed For Thanksgiving & Hurricane Sandy

Local food pantries struggling to keep up with the demand this holiday season.

For food pantries across Northern New Jersey, Hurricane Sandy dealt a double blow: It increased the number of families in need of assistance and shortened the span between Halloween (which Gov. Chris Christie moved to Nov. 5) and Thankgsiving, which comes early this year. Prior to the storm, the Community Food Bank of New Jersey reported more than 960,000 residents of Northern New Jersey are food insecure, meaning at times they lack access to enough food to maintain an active, healthy life.  The Community Food Bank is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive this Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9am to 2pm at the following locations in Essex County:

Where to Donate Turkeys in the Caldwells

Thanksgiving is next week. Here's what you could do to help area families in need take part in the feast.

It's that time of year when we rack up points on our supermarket cards and earn free turkeys for Thanksgiving.  Donating your free turkey to a less fortunate family is a special way to help a neighbor who might otherwise not be able to create the traditional feast for his or her family.  Here are some locations in the Caldwells where you can drop off items in time for Thanksgiving next Thursday.  There are two sites in the Caldwells for the Community Food Bank of NJ Holiday Turkey and Food Drive scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. —First Presbyterian Church, 326 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell —First Presbyterian Church West Caldwell Campus, 31 Fairview Ave., West Caldwell Suggested items include frozen turkeys (never fresh), …

Share Your Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Recipes!

Do you make a non-conventional dessert? Side dish? Main course? Tell us about it!

While the “traditional” Thanksgiving dinner usually consists of turkey and trimmings, we have all established different traditions through the years. That said: Do you bake or cook anything that strays from conventional Turkey Day cuisine? Perhaps it is a dessert, a side dish – or maybe even the main course. We are looking for your non-traditional recipes to share with our Patch readers. Please e-mail them (and pictures) to bfalzarano.patch@gmail.com and we will publish them early next week. And, of course, feel free to share below in the comments.
