The former Caldwell home furnishings shop moves to Church Street.
Earlier this summer, Patch reported that the home furnishings and gift shop called Saplings was moving from downtown Caldwell to Montclair. At the time, owner Cindy Blanco said: "Yes yes yes! I am moving to the fabulous Montclair!" Well, now that move is complete and Saplings is open for business at 74 Church St., right next to Milk Money. Saplings sells a wide range of furniture bedding, lighting, rugs, home accessories, and gifts. Blanco says Saplings has all anyone would need for that room they'd like to redo or start fresh with! Montclair Patch recently did a short Q&A with Blanco to ask about life in Montclair. Q) What do you like about your new location? A) I am happy I am in a historic building and two other women-owned retailers …

Caldwell merchants are gearing up for a kick-off to the holiday shopping season they’re billing as “Better Than Black Friday.” On Saturday, Nov. 26, Santa will stop by Caldwell Flowerland, which will become a winter wonderland for the occasion. Children can be photographed with Santa from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Don’t have a child? Pets are welcome, too. After the photo-op, take some time to shop and have lunch or a cup of coffee in town before picking up photos at Lovely Living Interiors. Select shops and restaurants will be holding sales to further welcome holiday shoppers. Plus, there will be choirs in the downtown singing Christmas carols to add to the old-fashioned Main Street experience. And don't forget to bring your American Express card…

Holiday deals to be had at local shops.
Black Friday is the first offical shopping day of the holiday season. But with hundreds of great shops on and near Bloomfield Avenue and other "Main Streets", the day after Thanksgiving doesn't have to mean a trip to the mall or a big box store. Have a more charming and traditional experience by taking your dollars to local downtowns. Since Christmas truly is a child’s holiday, it’s only right to put toys at the top of this guide to what local shops are offering: Learning Express stores in Montclair, Verona, and the new location in West Caldwell are offering 20% to 50% off select items and free gifts with the purchase of certain toys. The stores also boast a number of toys that are Learning Express exclusives, like the ever-popular All …

No doubt about it: There are a lot of big, big businesses out there. And, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Many of these large businesses provide us with some of our most needed services. Many of them employ our friends, our neighbors, our families—and, for that, we are grateful. Still, there is something about a Mom-and-Pop shop, the local place, the place where everyone recognizes your face. You know more of the money you spend there has a better chance of staying in your community. Not only do these places employ your friends, your neighbors, your families, a lot of these businesses are owned by them. Whatever your reason, there is something special about small business. Thankfully, residents of the Caldwells who support "small" don'…

Dealership opened at present West Caldwell location in 1970.
Dean Konner’s family has been in the car business so long, he says, “I don’t have blood, I have oil in my veins.” The Konners of Konner Chevrolet in West Caldwell are celebrating the dealership’s 92nd anniversary this year as Chevrolet the automaker turns 100. Dean's grandfather, Jacob Konner, started Konner Chevrolet in 1919 in Pine Brook. Jacob’s son, Mitchell, eventually took it over and handed it down to his sons—Al, Irving and Dean—in the 1970s. Now Al's son, Jarett, has become the fourth generation of Konner men to run the family business. Over the years, the dealership moved to Parsippany and Caldwell before settling on Bloomfield Avenue in West Caldwell in 1970. The brothers grew up in North Caldwell, went to West Essex High School…

It's a lesson every woman should learn: How to physically defend herself if confronted or grabbed by an attacker. And, believe it or not, all it takes is a quick flick of the wrist and a throaty yell. Essex County Patch editors recently got a hands-on lesson in warding off potential predators during a free women's self-defense class at Sovereign Martial Arts in Belleville. The hour-long session, taught by Senseis Edgardo Moran and George Lopez, included step-by-step instructions on palm heel strikes (a quick, yet powerful, move that can shatter the nose) and how to quickly escape a predator's grasp. Being vocal when performing a palm heel strike is key, according to Edgardo, who explained a hearty grunt can increase the intensity – and …
