More than a foot of snow is projected to dump on the Caldwells before this winter storm is through, according to the National Weather Service. There have been a number of events cancelled and postponed due to the inclement weather. Here's a running list of what we know. Plus, reminders about town ordinances on snow removal and parking restrictions. Cancellations/Postponements/Closings — Caldwell College will be closed on Saturday. Board of Education approves revising calendar to build in additional snow days.
The 2012-2013 Caldwell-West Caldwell school calendar has been revised to allow for additional snow days. The district's Board of Education approved this week opening for a half-day on Jan. 21 and a full day on Feb. 19. According to the district's website, if no snow/emergency days are used by Friday, April 19, then Friday, May 24, will be a school holiday for all students and district employees. That would make for a four-day Memorial Weekend. Monday, Jan. 21 was previously a scheduled vacation day for observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The following message about Hurricane Sandy recovery was released by North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi on Monday night: Over 80% of the power has been restored in North Caldwell. The schools are in session and all Municipal departments are opened for business as usual. Unfortunately however there are pocket outages in certain sections of the town. I have contacted our local PSE&G Coordinator and provided him with a list of these locations. He is going to check on the status of the all repairs and expedite them as soon as possible. The key areas that PSE&G are currently working on include Central Avenue (south of Notre Dame Church) and streets off of Mountain Avenue. West Essex, Caldwell-West Caldwell closed on Friday.
Students in the Caldwells will have missed at least a full week of school due to widespread power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy. All public schools will remain closed Friday, the fifth day in a row, while towns wait for PSE&G crews to repair downed power lines so power could be restored and roads may be reopened. Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools, West Essex Regional Schools and North Caldwell Schools have all announced that they will remain closed on Friday, Nov. 1. Caldwell area schools will remain closed due to Hurricane Sandy power outages.
