The goal was to get a greater voter turnout for school board elections, but the result has been more pressure on school board and municipal candidates, this author says.
This Election Day—for the first time since 1903—voters in most New Jersey’s school districts will elect local Boards of Education members on the same Nov. 6th ballot as candidates for municipal, county, state and federal offices, including the President. Ninety-percent of all New Jersey school districts—or 468 districts—hastened to switch elections from April to November after the state approved enabling legislation this year. Districts believe the change will boost voter-participation in school races where the average turnout was a dismal 15 percent for over a decade. But, if the number of inquiries my political consulting practice is fielding from municipal and school board candidates are any indication; this change has created …

A look at who is running for school board in Caldwell-West Caldwell, West Essex and North Caldwell.
All three school districts in the Caldwells voted earlier this year to move school board elections to the November general election, a change made possible by a new state law. The school board elections will remain non-partisan. There will be no vote on school budgets since the new law allows districts to approve a budget without a voter referendum so long as the budget satisfies a mandated 2% cap to the tax levy. Here's a look at who will be running for school board in the Caldwells. Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools Board of Education President Maureen McNish and Board Member Paula Getty are both seeking re-election to the BOE. Tom Adams, a retiring social studies teacher from James Caldwell High School, is also seeking one of the two open…

Caldwell-West Caldwell will vote on resolution which could move elections from April to November at Feb. 13 meeting.
Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools may soon join neighboring districts around the county, and throughout the state, by moving school board elections from April to November. On Monday night, the district’s Board of Education discussed the pros and cons of making the switch allowed by a state law passed last month. School boards in North Caldwell, Roseland, Essex Fells, Livingston and West Orange have already approved moving elections, with Caldwell-West Caldwell slated to make a decision at the Feb. 13 board meeting. According to the law passed by the Senate and Assembly, school boards can move the election and do not have to have a voter referendum on the school budget so long as it falls within the mandated 2% cap to the tax levy. Board …

Joins Essex Fells and Roseland; Fairfield yet to make decision.
Three of West Essex Regional Schools' four sending districts have voted to move school board elections to November and not have a public vote on the school budget so long as the budget remains under the mandated 2% cap. The North Caldwell Board of Education joined Roseland and Essex Fells Tuesday by voting 4-0 in favor of the move. Board Member Robert Kessler was not present at the meeting because he was away on business. School boards throughout the state were given the option to take these measures by a bill passed by the Assembly and Senate in January. The changes would be effective for four years at which time the districts could reverse their decisions. If Fairfield joins the other three sending districts, West Essex Regional Schools …
