Candidates won't know results of tight council race until Monday afternoon.
More than a week after the election, Essex County officials continue to count “buckets” of votes coming in from post offices that were flooded or without power after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region, County Clerk Chris Durkin said Wednesday. In addition to mail-in votes, emailed, faxed and provisional ballots remain to be counted. Final results will not be available until the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 19, the deadline set for mail-in votes by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Democratic councilman questions whether elected officials should use town's email system for campaigning.
Republican Caldwell councilmen running for re-election have taken borough emails down from their website after another councilman questioned whether it is proper to use the town’s email system for campaigning. Councilman John Kelley, a Democrat, said at Tuesday night’s council meeting he was concerned about Councilmen Rich Hauser and Peter Murray listing their town emails to communicate with voters. He also questioned what he called a possible conflict of interest created by having a borough employee actively involved in their campaign. Hauser and Murray have called both allegations unfounded.
