Red's Introduces Chicago Classic to the Caldwells

New West Caldwell restaurant serving up a taste of the Windy City—dipped Italian beef sandwiches—plus healthier versions of comfort food.

West Caldwell, home to a Chipotle, a Five Guys and a Muscle Maker Grill, is no stranger to the concept of fresh, fast food.  But the newest entry to the restaurant scene stands out for dishing out fare that's fast, fresh and also unique to the area. Red’s, which opened at 800 Bloomfield Ave. on Monday, introduces Chicago-style, dipped Italian beef sandwiches to our North Jersey palates.  Owner Barbi Ellen Newman, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, started out working at the Ritz Carlton and Le Perroquet Restaurant in the Windy City. When Newman returned to her native Jersey, she had much success with her Verona-based catering business, Mardi Gras. After selling Mardi Gras and spending time recently as a personal chef, she envisioned…

You'll Pardon Their Smoking

Hog Wild BBQ Co. specializes in "The Taste of Southern American Barbecue."

It's an early fall Friday night–how about a barbecue? With the opening of Hog Wild BBQ Co. in Caldwell, at least food-wise there really can be an endless summer of sorts, any night of the week. This isn't your uncle's barbecue with hockey puck burgers and metallic-tasting chicken. Hog Wild kicks it up a notch and does it Southern style; that means meat rubs, spices, sugars, curing … corn bread. It's down home, well done.  Yee-Haw! The menu reads like a Dukes of Hazzard script; the word "smokin'" is everywhere, in reference not to car stunts, but to the restaurant's slow-cooking, flavor-sealing method of meat preparation. If you say it out loud in mixed company, the name of one menu section might get you locked up by Sheriff Rosco–"Big Azzz…

We were there last Saturday (2/11/11), and thought it was fantastic. One of the owners served us (in conjunction with a waiter). Aside from the attention/service we received, the food was amazing. They started us with a "bread basket" of corn bread and small, southern muffins. This was accompanied by fresh butter. My husband had smoked wings which were juicy and tasted like they had been smoking …   more ›

A New Restaurant That Will Get in Your Blood

Organic 4 Life offers menu items for every blood type.

There's a new restaurant in West Caldwell serving food for folks of certain types–blood types, that is. Owner Darin Michael is a personal fitness trainer and nutritionist who for the past year has also been operating Body Sculptors at 555 Passaic Ave. A trainer for many years, he's seen endless health and weight-loss trends come and go, from hi-carb to no-carb. It was while working with a client who was on the famed Atkins Diet that he had an epiphany.  "She was training and training," he recalls, and dieting Atkins style, and yet "not budging weight wise." One day, the client brought in a book. "I read it over a weekend, and started following it," Michael said. He switched up his clients' diets accordingly and found immediate results. "I'…

P.F. Seafood Market W. Caldwell's Fresh Catch

Fish fans escape to restaurant's island near the end of town.

The restaurant business can be tough. The food—quality and kind—is super- important. Decor and atmosphere are paramount, as evidenced by the rash of eateries both new and old in The Caldwells going the extra mile in this area. Then there's location: Is the place easy to get in and out of, with a good amount of parking? The challenges are many, the victors few—but if that food is good, everything usually falls into place. P.F. Seafood Market and Restaurant  in West Caldwell recently opened to accolades for it's menu of seafood selections. Located at 1090 Bloomfield Ave., it's in an interesting spot that I've often referred to as "no-man's land" of The Caldwells. The commercial area just past The Gardens neighborhood has contained longtime …

Rockn' Joe is Quirky, Cool

Caldwell coffeehouse offers good drinks, food, atmosphere

It was on one of those cold pre-winter nights of November when I decided to take the kids to Caldwell Cinema—they and three certain Hollywood chipmunks had all but forced the visit. Since I had a few minutes to kill, I figured I'd grab a cup of coffee. I promised my son a cookie as we walked west on Bloomfield Avenue, and at the corner of Smull Avenue (at 339 Bloomfield Ave. to be exact) entered Rockn' Joe.  Located in the spot that Caldwell Camera was for decades (it's now a few stores down to the left and called Caldwell Photo), before opening a couple of years ago the retail space was given a complete overhaul, and Rockn' Joe is a cool, hip, modern-looking place that along with stores like D. Marie and even Edible Arrangements, is …
