Tapas Chef Moves From Montclair to Caldwell

Xunta to feature Spanish chef Gonzalo Fernandez.

The former chef of Tapastry in Montclair has been hired by the owners of a new tapas restaurant opening in Caldwell later this spring. Prior to Church Street's Tapastry, which is now closed, Gonzalo Fernandez was the chef at Xunta in the East Village for 15 years. The new Bloomfield Avenue restaurant will go by the same name. Co-owners are Alfonso Meneses and Carmen Mendez. Located in the former spot of Pasione de Mexico, Xunta, pronounced "SHOON-TA," will serve tapas and feature live Flamenco music, Mendez said.  The 50-seat restaurant, located at 392 Bloomfield Ave., is expected to open in late spring. Read about Xunta Tapas Bar in the East Village in New York Magazine  and The New York Times for a taste of what's to come. Did you ever …

PHOTOS: A Crowded Taste Of Montclair Kicks Off Restaurant Week

Check out the food at participating restaurants through April 1

The Taste of Montclair kicked off the Rotary Club's fourth annual Montclair Restaurant Week on Monday evening, attracting a massive crowd that chowed down on some of the best food to be found anywhere. Indeed, the Taste of Montclair event draws so many people that it actually had to be held at the Grove in Cedar Grove as no Montclair venue could accommodate so many ticketholders. Over the last two years, Restaurant Week has raised nearly $15,000 for Montclair's three largest food charities: the Human Needs Food Pantry, Toni's Kitchen, and the Salvation Army Feeding Program. The event helps the needy and celebrates one of Montclair's greatest resources—its amazing restaurants. The event's financial success is the result of the diners who …

NICO Kitchen + Bar Serves Up Sophistication

New restaurant at NJPAC offers 'Italian without borders' menu designed for sharing

The curtain's been raised on NICO Kitchen + Bar, the new, chic eatery that raises the bar on dinner-and-a-show in Newark. Tucked inside the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), chef Ryan DePersio's third restaurant in Essex County is inviting with a cool, casual atmosphere and an "Italian without borders" menu of sophisticated dishes designed for sharing. "(These are) dishes that made me who I am today," said DePersio, the 33-year-old Nutley-born restaurateur who also owns Fascino in Montclair and Bar Cara in Bloomfield. Signature bites from his other restaurants, like the grilled pork burger, pomegranate-chili wings with gorgonzola dipping sauce and quattro formaggio pizza, have (thankfully) made their way onto the Newark menu. But …

Breakfast Done Egg-cellent

The Original Pancake House offers stack up.

I love breakfast food. Quite often, and even during all times of the day, I drag the whole family out for traditionally early-morning feasts. One of my favorite decrees is "breakfast for dinner!" Like Italian restaurants, places serving breakfast in The Caldwells have multiplied threefold in the last decade. There are diners, coffeehouses, and in the specialist category, the Original Pancake House in West Caldwell (817 Bloomfield Ave.)  Inside, the OPH is done in an unassuming "country-casual" motif—yellowish/tan wood tables and booths with forest green accents and ceiling fans comprise most of the decor. The OPH is very family-friendly—there are toys in the waiting area, and even a kiddie commode. (I sent my daughter into it; she said it …
