Essex County Declares State of Emergency, PSE&G Poised to Respond

No significant power outages have been reported as of noon Friday, but storm expected to last into early morning Saturday.

No significant power outages have been reported in Essex County a few hours into Friday's Winter Storm, but PSE&G is ready to respond to what could be widespread outages throughout its service area, the utility said in advance of the Nor'easter. Contractors, including tree crews, are poised and ready and additional supplies, such as poles, transformer and other equipment, are on hand, PSE&G said. The Nor’easter could dump more than a foot of snow and bring heavy winds to Essex County, where widespread, long-term outages caused by Superstorm Sandy are still fresh on many residents’ minds. Essex County has declared a state of emergency, according to the county’s Office of Emergency Management. No parking will be allowed on country roads …

Caldwell Residents Demand Reliable Service From PSE&G

Residents in the Roseland Avenue area of the borough say they have routinely experienced power outages for years.

Caldwell residents fed up by frequent power outages came face-to-face with PSE&G representatives Tuesday night in a town hall-style meeting arranged by the borough’s mayor.  More than 50 disgruntled customers of the utility company listened and asked questions for more than an hour in the gymnasium of the Caldwell Community Center as three employees of the utility company outlined a plan to improve service. Regional Public Affairs Manager for Essex and Passaic Counties for PSE&G Everton Scott said trees are the root cause in the majority of outages and crews have already begun to work on more than 60 problem areas. “We think if we execute our plan as we’ve laid out, we’ll see some relief,” Scott said, adding, “We can never make a …

Letter: 'Rethinking the Power We Really Have'

The writers are re-elected members of the North Caldwell Council who ran unopposed in the Nov. 6 election.

For a moment in time we all experienced some loss of power with regards to our routines and functionality. Our children were unable to charge their iPhones; some lost the luxury of blow drying their hair; we sat on gas lines for what seemed an eternity. Some New Jersey citizens lost their homes, others sadly lost their lives. After much reflection and inconvenience, we have had the luxury of rethinking the power we really have in spite of natural disasters. As individuals, we have the power to vote and choose our representatives to lead us, establish policy, and to connect communities for the common good. As families, we have the power to instill and foster values to our children and grandchildren so that they can hopefully improve upon …

Local Business Hosts Hurricane BBQ

Community invited to Caldwell College campus for hot meal courtesy of Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning.

A local business brought warmth and a hot meal to area residents in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.  Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning hosted a free barbecue Friday on the Caldwell College campus. The school was running on generators and classes were closed all week after the powerful storm caused widespread power outages throughout the Caldwells.  The Fairfield-based business grilled up hamburgers and hot dogs for students and other members of the community. Free company sweatshirts were also distributed. Owner Mike Stevens organized the barbecue with sons, Matt and Mike, working the grill.

Half of North Caldwell Loses Power, Again

Blown fuses seem to be cause of widespread outages Wednesday afternoon.

Half of the borough of North Caldwell is in the dark again Wednesday afternoon, according to Police Chief Mark Deuer.  Deuer said three fuses blew on Smull Avenue around 1 p.m. Wednesday causing power outages from Gould Avenue south toward Bloomfield Avenue.  The issue comes less than 24 hours since power was restored to the borough, which was 100% in the dark after Hurricane Sandy swept through the town on Monday, Oct. 29. Deuer said he could see the fuses hanging down on Smull and that PSE&G had been notified.  "We are trying to get a truck out here to fix them," he said around 2:30 p.m.   “We’re optimistic that the power will come back on shortly," he said. Meanwhile, snow from the winter storm Athena was blanketing the borough midday …

North Caldwell Mayor: More Than 80% of Power Restored

Mayor Alessi updates residents on power outages, elections, recreation programs and more.

The following message about Hurricane Sandy recovery was released by North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi on Monday night:  Over 80% of the power has been restored in North Caldwell. The schools are in session and all Municipal departments are opened for business as usual. Unfortunately however there are pocket outages in certain sections of the town. I have contacted our local PSE&G Coordinator and provided him with a list of these locations. He is going to check on the status of the all repairs and expedite them as soon as possible. The key areas that PSE&G are currently working on include Central Avenue (south of Notre Dame Church) and streets off of Mountain Avenue. The most recent reports indicate that power may be restored within the …

No School for Caldwell-West Caldwell Monday

Sixth day district closed due to power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools will be closed Monday, Nov. 5, according to the district.  Only one school, Washington School, in the six-school district has power fully restored on Sunday night after Hurricane Sandy caused widespread power outages a week ago.  The district hopes to have all schools open Tuesday, Election Day, which will be an early dismissal day. "If all goes well with the electrical work tomorrow morning all schools will be opened Tuesday, Nov. 6 through Friday, Nov. 9," according to a Honeywell emergency alert sent to parents Sunday evening. Classes will be held on Thursday and Friday, originally days off, because the NJEA Teachers' Convention in Atlantic City has been cancelled.  All school district Halloween …

North Caldwell Mayor: About Half of Borough Restored

All North Caldwell schools back in session Monday.

The following message was released Sunday night by North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi. I am happy to say that as a result of the diligent work performed by PSE&G crews last evening at Grandview Place/Avenue the repairs were completed and a substantial portion of the Borough now has electricity (50% +/-). For the most part power has been restored to portions of North Caldwell west of Mountain Avenue, with the exception of the triangle where Smull meets Mountain Avenue. Sandy’s winds were so severe that large trees were uprooted causing power lines to fall on both sides of Smull Avenue. This caused extensive damage to the distribution lines and as a result a large “main line” has to be installed but only after transmission lines have been …

West Caldwell Mayor: Power Restored to 90 Percent of Town

Warming station at firehouse will close. Library will be open for charging at 9 a.m.

The following message was released from the West Caldwell Mayor Joe Tempesta Sunday evening:  PSE&G continues to make progress and we estimate now that 90 percent of the township has power. We recognize that all residents are not receiving this message, but those of you that are receiving this message we ask if you can share this message with your neighbors. Also please check on your neighbors particularly senior citizens that may need extra assistance.  We are getting close to having more power restored in the last hour. We have had Westview Road and Holiday Drive get power back and we are aware of about a dozen other streets that still need to get power restored. If you have a situation where you have no power but your next door neighbor…
