The following message about Hurricane Sandy recovery was released by North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi on Monday night: Over 80% of the power has been restored in North Caldwell. The schools are in session and all Municipal departments are opened for business as usual. Unfortunately however there are pocket outages in certain sections of the town. I have contacted our local PSE&G Coordinator and provided him with a list of these locations. He is going to check on the status of the all repairs and expedite them as soon as possible. The key areas that PSE&G are currently working on include Central Avenue (south of Notre Dame Church) and streets off of Mountain Avenue. Caldwell-West Caldwell Schools will be closed Monday, Nov. 5, according to the district. Only one school, Washington School, in the six-school district has power fully restored on Sunday night after Hurricane Sandy caused widespread power outages a week ago. The district hopes to have all schools open Tuesday, Election Day, which will be an early dismissal day. "If all goes well with the electrical work tomorrow morning all schools will be opened Tuesday, Nov. 6 through Friday, Nov. 9," according to a Honeywell emergency alert sent to parents Sunday evening. Classes will be held on Thursday and Friday, originally days off, because the NJEA Teachers' Convention in Atlantic City has been cancelled. All school district Halloween …

The following message was released Sunday night by North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi. I am happy to say that as a result of the diligent work performed by PSE&G crews last evening at Grandview Place/Avenue the repairs were completed and a substantial portion of the Borough now has electricity (50% +/-). For the most part power has been restored to portions of North Caldwell west of Mountain Avenue, with the exception of the triangle where Smull meets Mountain Avenue. Sandy’s winds were so severe that large trees were uprooted causing power lines to fall on both sides of Smull Avenue. This caused extensive damage to the distribution lines and as a result a large “main line” has to be installed but only after transmission lines have been …

Also please check on your neighbors particularly senior citizens that may need extra assistance. We are getting close to having more power restored in the last hour. We have had Westview Road and Holiday Drive get power back and we are aware of about a dozen other streets that still need to get power restored. If you have a situation where you have no power but your next door neighbor…

North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi confirms what many residents are hearing: full power may not be restored until Friday, Nov. 9. Notre Dame will co-host a Pizza Potluck for the second night in a row in the Trinity Academy Gymnasium.
North Caldwell Mayor Joseph Alessi reported 100 percent of the borough remains without power Friday after what he called the “worst storm of our lifetime.” Alessi said full power is expected to be restored by Friday, Nov. 9, more than 10 days after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the state. While all major roads have been re-opened, numerous side streets remain blocked off by downed trees and power lines. The borough plans to bring in generators and generator-powered lights for Election Day next Tuesday, Nov. 6. All four districts in North Caldwell vote at Notre Dame Church. Notre Dame will co-host a Pizza Potluck for the second night in a row with St. Aloysius Church in Caldwell in the Trinity Academy Gymnasium at 5 p.m. Pizza will be available…

Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing released the following message Thursday afternoon: Dear Caldwell Residents, During this difficult time we want to assure you all that we have been and will continue to be in constant contact with PSE&G. During the hurricane the main transfer station that services our area, located in the Ironbound section of Newark, was flooded and rendered useless. Subsequent sub stations across the region also were flooded, compounding the delivery of electric power to our streets. PSE&G is working to restore and rebuild these sub stations and ultimately to return power to our streets. As of this writing, we have had a few streets come back. They are still telling us that anytime between now and Monday, Nov. 5th our power …

Electric Company official says Hurricane Sandy 'similar but a much more serious storm than Irene.'
Nearly 150,000 PSE&G customers in Essex County are still without power Wednesday morning after what officials called a "painstaking" restoration process. Power has been restored to large parts of Newark, including Newark International Liberty Airport, Elizabeth and parts of Jersey City. Newark likely experienced the brunt of outages, with 95 percent of the city dark Tuesday. That number has dropped to 35 percent, with an assessment of substations continuing Wednesday. "We have an enormous amount of work ahead of us," said Ralph Izzo, chairman and chief executive officer of PSE&G. Hurricane Sandy, said another PSE&G official, was "similar but a much more serious storm than Irene." There were more than 255,000 Essex County PSE&G customers…

North Caldwell residents can ask PSE&G questions about plans to upgrade overhead transmission systems at Wednesday night forum.
Story updated at 2:05 p.m. PSE&G's plans to upgrade the overhead transmission systems running through North Caldwell are the subject of a forum tonight at borough hall. Representatives from the utility company will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. to answer questions about the Northeast Grid Reliability Project, which increases 25 miles of transmission lines, including those in North Caldwell, from 138,000 to 230,000 volts. PSE&G Regional Public Affairs Manager Richard Dwyer in a letter to residents dated August 27, 2012 stated that PSE&G’s Northeast Grid Reliability Project is “needed to ensure reliable electric power for nearly one million New Jersey residents in the northern part of the state.” Shannon Desiderioscioli, who lives on White …

PSE&G is offering their customers with defective furnaces a freebie—but you have to act now.
Following one of the warmest summers in recent memory, PSE&G is reminding residents that it won't stay warm forever. Winter is approaching and PSE&G is offering gas heating customers a special incentive to turn the heat on now: the utility company will come out and start your unit at no charge through Sept. 9 to see if there is a problem with the system. “Chilly weather will be here soon, and one of the best things our gas heating customers can do now is to check their system to ensure safe and efficient operation before the colder weather arrives,” said Joe Bassolino, PSE&G’s manager of business development. “By testing their heating systems early, customers will be prepared for the upcoming cold weather. In addition, PSE&G will be able …
