North Caldwell is the latest municipality to approve PSE&G's plans to upgrade overhead transmission systems as part of the utility company's Northeast Grid Reliability Project. North Caldwell's Zoning Board of Adjustment unanimously approved the upgrade of nine towers in the borough on Wednesday night, according to a report in The Progress. Residents who live in proximity to the existing towers expressed safety and health concerns throughout the hearings of PSE&G's application, which began back in September. The Northeast Grid Reliability Project will increase 25 miles of transmission lines, including those in North Caldwell, from 138,000 to 230,000 volts. Utility says costs for electric, gas customers will drop—not spike—under proposed plan.
Public Service Electric & Gas officials Wednesday refuted accusations contained in a letter from five of the state’s most prominent lobbying groups Tuesday to the state Board of Public Utilities concerning its plan to spend nearly $4 billion to strengthen its power grid. The company says the plan will prevent widespread outages during major storms like last fall’s Super Storm Sandy. However, the lobbying groups disagreed, telling the board the proposed plan would spike utility bills for both residential and industrial customers. The lobbying groups included AARP, New Jersey Citizen Action, the Chemistry Industry Council of New Jersey, the New Jersey Large Energy Users Coalition, and NJ Public Interest Research Group. A project to increase electric capacity and improve power delivery throughout northern New Jersey includes replacing 20 towers in West Caldwell, according to PSE&G. The utility company will hold a public workshop to address questions and concerns with West Caldwell residents regarding the "Northeast Grid Reliability Project” on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Essex County Vocational School, 620 Passaic Ave., in West Caldwell. No significant power outages have been reported as of noon Friday, but storm expected to last into early morning Saturday.
No significant power outages have been reported in Essex County a few hours into Friday's Winter Storm, but PSE&G is ready to respond to what could be widespread outages throughout its service area, the utility said in advance of the Nor'easter. Contractors, including tree crews, are poised and ready and additional supplies, such as poles, transformer and other equipment, are on hand, PSE&G said. The Nor’easter could dump more than a foot of snow and bring heavy winds to Essex County, where widespread, long-term outages caused by Superstorm Sandy are still fresh on many residents’ minds. Caldwell residents fed up by frequent power outages came face-to-face with PSE&G representatives Tuesday night in a town hall-style meeting arranged by the borough’s mayor. More than 50 disgruntled customers of the utility company listened and asked questions for more than an hour in the gymnasium of the Caldwell Community Center as three employees of the utility company outlined a plan to improve service. Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing has arranged for a town hall meeting with representatives of PSE&G on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m., according to a notice posted on the borough's website. The public meeting will be held in the gymnasium of the Caldwell Community Center, 1 Provost Square in Caldwell. Representatives from PSE&G will be available to discuss plans to address power issues in the borough. They will also welcome discussion from residents about their concerns. Caldwell was one of many towns in West Essex to experience widespread power outages during recent storms, particularly Superstorm Sandy. High winds from Hurricane Sandy and Winter Storm Athena have caused low-lying power lines in West Caldwell.
A Waste Management garbage truck snapped dangling power lines at the intersection of Bloomfield and St. Charles avenues Thursday morning dragging one of the live wires down onto the truck. The 10:16 a.m. incident occurred when the truck was picking up garbage at an apartment complex on Bloomfield Avenue and hit the low-hanging wires. “The garbage truck pulled the electrical service off the building and a live wire was left on top of the truck, leaving the driver of the truck trapped inside,” said West Caldwell Fire Chief Jim Alvine. The West Caldwell Fire Department remained on the scene for two hours to check the building for signs of fire. PSE&G crews are back in North Caldwell working to restore power after Winter Storm Athena strikes.
After Winter Storm Athena, PSE&G is once again working to restore power to North Caldwell. Although power went back down just as the nor'easter hit, police do not think the new storm caused the power outage. “It was thought that the problem was on Smull (Avenue) but that was only part of the problem,” said North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer. “Initially we thought it would be a quick fix, but the electrical system has been compromised by the hurricane and the problem may be more complex than we thought.” Township officials have been on phone calls with PSE&G all day, he said.
