North Caldwell Fire Department responds to fire on Oak Place.
A fire that broke out in a chimney of a North Caldwell home Saturday night was quickly extinguished and did not spread, according to fire officials. The North Caldwell Fire Department arrived to find 27 Oak Place shortly after 8 p.m. filled with heavy smoke and smoke detectors blaring, Chief John D’Ascensio stated in a release. Firefighters put out the fire in the fire box and removed the burnt logs, the chief stated. The residents were allowed to return to the house after the smoke was cleared. 'Twas the weekend before Christmas and all through the Caldwells sirens could be heard signalling the arrival of Santa. Volunteer fire departments from North Caldwell and Caldwell escorted the jolly old elf through the streets of both towns on Saturday and Sunday. Seeing Claus go by their homes is a highly anticipated moment for young and old. Helpers give out candy canes and fire safety information to the children in North Caldwell. Santa Claus really is coming to town. This weekend, local fire departments will partake in a Christmastime tradition and transport Santa through North Caldwell and Caldwell. On Saturday, Dec. 22, St. Nick will hop on a North Caldwell Fire Department truck at noon, bringing candy canes for all the boys and girls, as well as fire safety messages for their parents. On Sunday, Dec. 23, starting at 11:30 a.m., the Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department will parade its fire vehicles through every street in the borough, including Santa on his sleigh. Members of the fire department will hand out candy canes and collect non-perishable foods for the Caldwell Food Pantry. So listen for the sirens and come out to wave hello to Santa!

They skipped over our street in North Caldwell this year it seems like. Saw them on Stephanie Drive and heard them on Grandview, but they did not come up my block. My daughter was all bundled up and ready to go, but no Santa. :(   more ›
