Lincoln Students Jump Rope for Heart

Caldwell elementary school raises more than $4K for American Heart Association.

More than 90 third through fifth-grade Lincoln School students participated in the Caldwell school's 13th annual Jump Rope for Heart. Held on March 22, students raised $4,625 for the American Heart Association. Students sign in and are directed to one of six stations around the school’s multi-purpose room. The activities range from individual jumping stations, to team jump roping, hopscotch, double dutch and more. Students begin at one station and progress around the room until they have completed all six stations.  The fundraiser was coordinated by school nurse Maryann Ciesla and physical education instructor Sheila Zeman. “A real highlight of the night is 'jumping in the dark,'" Ciesla said in a release from the district. “Students can …

Students Deliver 'Dinners in a Box' to Food Pantry

Lincoln Elementary School students help make Thanksgiving dinner possible for families in need.

For many families this year, the makings of a traditional turkey dinner for the Thanksgiving holiday may be out of reach. So, to make the holiday season a bit brighter and stomachs a bit fuller for those in need, students from Lincoln Elementary School, Caldwell, held their annual food drive, collecting enough food to make 32 “dinners in a box”—a new school record. Coordinated by teachers Christina Dunne and Margot Kolator, the efforts are part of the fifth grade civics curriculum. “We try to do several community service projects each year,” said Dunne. “Our annual food drive helps the students see firsthand how even a small gesture can go a long way, especially when everyone chips in. Each year, we collect the items needed to create a …

Lincoln Students Elect John Adams for President

Caldwell elementary students choose president from the past in mock election.

Ask most Americans who won the most recent presidential election and they will say Barack Obama. But, ask a student at Lincoln Elementary School in Caldwell and you may get a totally different answer. Lincoln students went to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and elected John Adams for president over candidate Ronald Reagan.  The activity was the culmination of Election 2012—A Link to the Past, a program designed by media specialist Doreen Golembeski that used former presidents as presidential candidates. “All too often during a presidential election, simulated elections become opportunities for youngsters to simply echo their parents' voting patterns without making real choices on their own,” said Golembeski. “This program gave the students a…

Local Mayors Take Suggestions From Lincoln Students

Are you more civic-minded than a second grader?

Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing and West Caldwell Mayor Joseph Tempesta met with some very important local citizens to discuss their towns last month. Lincoln Elementary School in Caldwell invited the mayors to visit their school as part of the yearly civics curriculum. The students questioned the mayors about their positions, responsibilities, likes and dislikes; and provided suggestions for town improvements from an eight-year-old’s point of view. The students shared a variety of ideas, including suggestions for making Caldwell and West Caldwell “greener” and their hope for a community garden in Caldwell. Following an introductory unit on national and local government, students from Myra Leven and Anna Walek’s second-grade classes devised a …
