Third-Graders Spread Love of Reading During National Library Week

Lincoln Elementary School students traveled to the Caldwell Public Library to perform a song and read to younger students in April

National Library Week may be over, but the effects will live on for many years to come as third-grade students from Lincoln Elementary School travelled to the Caldwell Public Library to celebrate reading and encourage younger students to pick up a book. In April, students from media specialist Doreen Golembeski’s library class walked to the nearby library to share in story time and perform an original song, “Caldecott Books”. The song, written by Golembeski, is sung to the well-known “Adams Family” theme song. After settling in next to the pre-school and kindergarten students, the third-graders listened to stories read by children’s librarian Deborah Khost and then performed the song that highlights various Caldecott authors and books. “…

Caldwell-West Caldwell Kids Rally Against Smoking

Fourth graders write speeches and songs from lessons learned in health class.

Fourth grade students at Lincoln and Washington Schools in Caldwell and West Caldwell spent weeks learning and preparing for an Anti-Smoking Rally.  Students take information learned in Mrs. Zeman’s fourth grade health class and create speeches, songs and jingles for the rally.  The speeches and songs are meant to inspire others with a strong and creative anti-smoking message.  Are you quitting smoking in 2013 or have another New Year's Resolution? Share your resolutions here.

Lincoln School Wins Library Card Contest

Four Caldwell-West Caldwell elementary schools compete to have the most library card sign-ups.

Lincoln Elementary School students blew away the competition in the recent Caldwell and West Caldwell Library Card Sign-Up contest. The challenge, created by the libraries to encourage students to access their local libraries, pitted the four Caldwell-West Caldwell elementary schools against each other. Students had a little over a month to register for library cards or fill out a form indicating that they were already cardholders.   Lincoln came out on top with 72% of students registered for their own library cards. Wilson Elementary School came in a distant second with 52% and Washington and Jefferson followed with 50% of the students registered for library cards.

This Old Caldwell

Lincoln School Smiles From 1946

Vintage image depicts 30 classmates at Caldwell elementary school.

Do you recognize any of the charming young men or lovely young ladies in this 1946 photo? They are all members of Miss Galloway's sixth grade class at Lincoln Elementary School in Caldwell. Ted Bekefi, circled in red, sent Patch this 66-year-old photo. He circled his best friend, Duane Bruce, in blue. Bruce now lives in Tallinn, Estonia. Befeki is living in San Francisco. The classmates are members of the Grover Cleveland High School Class of 1952, which will hold its 60th reunion on Sept. 13.  Share your school memories from the Caldwells in the comments. And if you recognize any students in the photos, let us know!

Daisy Troop Collecting Shoes for Soles4Souls

Drop your unwanted, gently used shoes off at one of four locations.

What do you do with your kids’ shoes that no longer fit, or your own pairs that you haven’t worn in years?  Lincoln Elementary School's Daisy Troop is collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that procures shoes and gets them to those in need. All kinds of footwear—sneakers, boots, sandals, dress shoes, etc.—are accepted so long as they are in new or gently worn condition.  The collection runs through Friday, Feb. 17. Shoes can be dropped off at the following locations: According to the non-profit organization’s website, www.soles4souls.org, Soles4Souls was founded in 2004 after CEO and Founder Wayne Elsey watched a single shoe wash up on the beach while watching television coverage of the 2004 tsunami in Southeast Asia…
