Letter: Legal Impediment to Non-Lethal Deer Control Methods

Hilltop Conservancy Treasurer Theresa Trapp pens Patch Letter to the Editor on deer control.

Anti-culling activists insist there are economical and effective non-lethal alternatives to control local deer populations. A previous letter explored the high cost ($3,000+ per deer) and low effectiveness of immuno-contraceptives like GonaCon. Surgical sterilization (either tubal ligation or ovariectomy) would be less expensive (~$1,800 per deer) and far more effective – however, given New Jersey’s current regulations, neither method is operationally feasible. Under statute N.J.S.A. 23:4-42.4, a municipality wishing to conduct any kind of deer management program must first obtain a community-based deer management program permit from the DEP. Imbedded in this statute’s language is the requirement for prior written consent from surrounding …

Letter: Deer Contraceptives: It’s About the Politics and Science

The following letter was submitted by the Animal Protection League of New Jersey.

Hilltop Conservancy Treasurer Theresa Trapp (Deer Contraceptives: It's All About the Math posted on Feb. 14) omits key facts when claiming that the annual killing of deer at Hilltop and in South Mountain Reservation is somehow more effective than non-lethal approaches. First, there is established science: the white-tail’s breeding ecology. Deer, especially previously non-hunted populations, respond to hunting pressure with higher fecundity. Hunting stimulates breeding by increasing carrying capacity. Fewer competitors results in more food for surviving females, earlier pregnancies, better neonatal health, and larger litters. Non-hunted sites show no increase in breeding. By Ms. Trapp’s own admission: "… and yet 30% of female fawns become …

who cares as long as the information is accurate? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to google this information. The facts are out there and you know as well as I do that the hunting community does not care about facts because contraception in deer has been vehemently opposed at every opportunity by them. They kill because "there's too many deer". They kill coyotes in "contests" because "they're …   more ›

Deer Contraceptives – It's All About the Math

Hilltop Conservancy Treasurer Theresa Trapp pens Letter to the Editor regarding county deer hunt.

Essex County’s 2013 deer hunt has come to a close, once again removing many of this over-abundant species from our reservations (Hilltop – 61, South Mountain – 43). Contrary to naysayers, deer have not become extinct because of the program, and there are small signs that our nature preserves are beginning to recover from decades of browse damage. Contraceptives are sometimes proposed as an alternative to hunting. However, we need to acknowledge that non-lethal methods to control deer populations would involve significant investment of taxpayer dollars, particularly immuno-contraception (e.g., GonaCon). Each GonaCon inoculation costs more than $1,000 per dose (including locating, immobilizing, inoculating and collaring). In addition, each…

Talk to any policeman from any of The Caldwells,Essex Fells,Verona and Cedar Grove as they ride all through the aforementioned boroughs at night.Since the development of The Hilltop and now the county hunts the last several years, deer are now noticed in greater numbers than ever before.Obviously this makes sense, the deer will now head out to our yards for protection and that is exactly what they …   more ›

Letter: Babysitting at Caldwell Community Center

Writer is a local mom looking for families interested in joining Caldwell Community Center if they would extend childcare hours.

I wanted a chance to reach out to the families in our community, regarding the Caldwell Community Center in the center of our terrific town. This is a wonderful resource for local families and in case you didn't know—they just underwent some renovations that included an updated daycare room last month.  As a West Caldwell Resident and working mother of two children, I would love to join this center due to the tremendous amount of activities and resources they have available! My only issue with joining the Caldwell Community Center is their babysitting hours. My girlfriends and I have small toddlers and would like to join with our families, but we don't have anyone that can watch our kids while we work out a few days a week. The only …

There is a reason! Not enough current ccc families needing daycare on weeknights. I am reaching out to see if anyone else would want to Join the ccc if they offered it. Fyi...ive received a couple emails already of other moms that never joined because of the same issue. So..this not only benefits me...but the ccc too...who might get families to join.   more ›

Letter: Purchase Property for Open Space

Letter writer is a resident of Personette Street in Caldwell who favors township purchasing Knights of Columbus hall.

Imagine when the residents of Personette Street, Kirkwood Place and Orchard Square attended the standing room only Planning Board Meeting on April 11th. Now imagine only four residents from two of the mentioned streets attending the Council Meeting on July 17th. When the concerned residents thought that a church was going to buy the Knights of Columbus building, our neighborhood came together in their entirety. After the church withdrew their application we were all pleased, but interest in the future of the building, noise and parking problems seem to wane.  I must remind my fellow residents, that “this is not a done deal as yet!” For those who are not aware, several individuals want to build on the Knights site. One wants to build …

Letter: Local Realtors Using Flags Irresponsibly

The writer is a member of the Caldwell American Legion Post 185.

I am writing this letter to voice my concern about the recent trend of local Realtors placing American flags along the curb sides in the West Essex area during the Fourth of July. Although it appears to be a nice patriotic gesture on their part, in reality, it is an advertising tool that I find inappropriate. If the Realtors are truly genuine in their patriotism, the flags should not display their business cards. These same cards and flags end up as litter days later and are seen knocked over and lying on the ground. I personally find it distasteful to attach your own picture to an American flag for personal gain. Can we expect to see these business cards attached to crosses on Good Friday or to the Star of David on Yom Kippur eventually? …

Letter: Vandalism at Grover Cleveland Park

The letter submitted by the Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy states "vandalism is impacting the safety and beauty of the park."

An ongoing problem at Grover Cleveland Park, during the day and night, is the vandalism throughout the park especially in the playground and picnic area. In the playground area the swings, the slide and the synthetic surface are damaged and have been replaced before. The water fountains are often filled with dirt and are currently not functioning. The port-a-johns have been knocked over and the doors have been broken. There have been many light bulbs and globes on the paths of the park that have been broken. Unfortunately, the vandalism is impacting the safety and beauty of the park. The park is closed from 10 p.m. to dawn. The Grover Cleveland Park Conservancy

Letter: Thanks for Rockapella Tickets

Letter writer won tickets from Patch to see show at NJPAC.

I don't know the very nice gentelman's name who called up to let us know we won tickets for Rockapella at NJPAC, but we wanted to say THANK YOU to him and everyone at the Patch! I ended up buying four more seats and took the whole family. It was our first time at NJPAC and the show was great. It was a breeze getting there, parking and coming home. The theater is beautiful (not a bad seat in the house) and not too overwhelming a space for the kids. We will definitely go back. Thank you again!!!   Barbra Veffer, Caldwell

Letter writer thanks community for making collection a success.

Thank you so much for posting the turkey and ham collection on the Patch. On Monday, April 2, we collected approximately 85 turkeys and hams which were given to a few local families and the rest were brought to St John's Soup Kitchen in Newark where they filled the freezers!  We are grateful to the people of St Aloysius Church, Trinity Academy, JCHS and all of the Patch Readers who contributed. Thank you! Patty D'Angelo West Caldwell
