The Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex presented Maria Burak, Director of Human Services for the Borough of Caldwell, with the Kiwanis Community Service Award, the service club announced recently. The award was presented on Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Hanover Manor during the club's 89th Charter Night. As the second largest Kiwanis club in the New Jersey District, President Mildred Fitzburgh highlighted some of the ways in which Maria Burak has impacted the West Essex communities she serves, including running the Caldwell Food Pantry and the Grover Cleveland Senior Center. The annual Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex Christmas Walk featured an array of homes decked out for the holidays. The houses on this year's tour ranged from a 1929 Craftsman-style cottage on Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell to a grand farmhouse on Arlington Avenue in Caldwell which was once a bed and breakfast. The homes, as well as the historic Grover Cleveland Birthplace and the Zenas C. Crane House, were open for self-guided tours from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Proceeds from tour tickets will help fund the many charitable projects of the local Kiwanis Club. The club was founded 88 years ago and raises approximately $45,000 a year for projects that support youth, help families in crisis and otherwise benefit the community.

It's the biggest event of the year in Caldwell. More than 30,000 attendees and 150 vendors, plus rides and entertainment, line Bloomfield Avenue the first Sunday in October for the Rotary-Kiwanis Caldwell Street Fair. This year's 21st annual street fair was captured on video using three time-lapse cameras which were set up along the half-mile stretch of the fair. The six-minute video condenses 12 hours of footage, from set up to breakdown to all the fun in between. Save the date! The 22nd annual Caldwell Street Fair will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013.

Update: Advance ticket discount extended to Wednesday, Nov. 28. The Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex will once again host, “The Christmas Walk,” a self-guided tour of homes decorated for the holiday season. The tour is set for Sunday, Dec. 2, from noon to 4:30 p.m Six local homes and two historic 19th-century homes will be decked out for the holidays in this special fundraiser. A host at each house will be available to answer questions about the distinctive collections and unique décor. The Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex has donated $20,000 toward the construction of new softball dugouts at James Caldwell High School. The donation helps to fulfill the Rotary Community Challenge—a pledge by the Rotary Club of the Caldwells to donate $20,000 for new dugouts to the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education if the community could match that amount. The existing softball dugouts have no roofs, walls or floors. The first Sunday in October always means one thing in the Caldwells—it’s time for the Rotary/Kiwanis Caldwell Street Fair. The 21st annual Caldwell Street Fair will bring more than 200 vendors and an estimated 30,000 area residents to downtown Caldwell on Sunday, Oct. 7. Fair hours are noon to 5 p.m. Caldwell merchants, crafters and other vendors will sell their merchandise along Bloomfield Avenue, from Roseland to Central avenues. For more than five years, Lincoln Elementary School’s Home and School Association (H.S.A.) has been saving for a new school sign. However, every time the H.S.A. raised the money for the sign, something more important was needed—a playground, a sound system, and even new picnic tables. The Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex has come to the rescue, donating a new sign for the oldest of the local elementary schools. “We are very grateful and appreciate all that the Kiwanis do for our town,” said Lincoln School Principal Adam Geher. “The sign is so colorful and just perfect for our elementary school.” The decorative new sign replaces a rustic wooden sign that has sat on the school’s lawn for as long as anyone asked can remember.
