PHOTOS: Penguins on Parade at Jefferson School

First graders complete science unit, create "March of the Penguins" bulletin board.

Students in Mrs. Monk and Mrs. Juliano's first-grade classes at Jefferson School in West Caldwell recently finished a science unit on penguins—and their hard work is proudly displayed on a bulletin board outside their classrooms. Students studied a variety of penguins—from Yellow-Eyed and African penguins to Chinstrap and Emperor penguins. They created journals and art about their penguins and even performed a penguin play. As one first-grader put it in his journal, "Penguins are awesome!"

Special guest appearance by "Thomas Jefferson" himself, sort of.

Jefferson School in West Caldwell celebrated founding father Thomas Jefferson's 269th birthday on Monday with a guest appearance by "Thomas Jefferson," portrayed by Jefferson School dad, Joe Eckhardt. Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743. Thomas Jefferson visited the elementary school students during gym classes and demonstrated traditional games he played as a child in the 1740s and 1750s, such as graces, cup and ball, rolling hoop and quoits (ring toss). The children had fun playing the modern versions of these games. Students came to school dressed in their Jefferson apparel and were given an ice pop, courtesy of ShopRite of West Caldwell, as a special Jefferson Day treat.
