A James Caldwell High School student was recognized this week for her high score on the National Latin III exam. High school junior Maria Bychkov scored a 35 out of a possible 40 on the national exam and earned the Gold Summa Cum Laude award. The national average for the exam, which is a voluntary exam initiated by student request, is a 25. “This was something I wanted and thought I could do,” added Bychov. “With [high school Latin teacher] Dr. [Christoper] Trause as a teacher and mentor, I knew I could do well.” Trause credited Bychov's success to her commitment to the material. “This is not an exam for which we prepare in class,” said Trause. “Preparing for this exam was something that Maria had to do on her own time. Students will bring Broadway songs to the local high school's stage on June 8.
James Caldwell High School students in the theater arts club will take the stage and star in its first ever Cabaret. The cabaret will be a fundraiser for the theater club and feature more than 30 high school students. Mark your calendars for the show on Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the high school. The students will put on an elegant evening of Broadway songs while ticket holders can also enjoy coffee and dessert. The Caldwell Chiefs Camp will run from July 8-12.
Give your child the extra edge this fall football season by sending him to the Caldwell Athletic Club's week-long summer football camp. The Caldwell Chiefs Camp will run between July 8-12 from 8:45 to 11:30 a.m. at the Kiwanis Oval. The football camp is for students entering grades four through nine and the cost is $125 per child. The camp is designed to give every athlete a solid foundation in the basic fundamentals of the sport, whether he is playing offence, defense or special teams. The drills and techniques taught during the camp will help the young athletes in the upcoming football season in the fall. Schools Superintendent James Heinegg will hold a public meeting about how technology can be better utilized in the district. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in the Board of Education conference room at Harrison School, 104 Gray St. Heinegg is asking for public input on what direction the district should go regarding technology. The newly appointed district Supervisor of Technology Don Markese will also attend the meeting. James Caldwell High School a contender in the Educational Impact category in prestigious statewide competition.
James Caldwell High School's recent spring musical production of "Kiss Me, Kate" has been nominated in the Educational Impact category in the Paper Mill Playhouse's Rising Star Awards, the Millburn theater announced Monday. The awards, modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, serve the entire state of New Jersey with nearly 100 entered productions from public, private and parochial high schools. Some of Broadway’s biggest stars began as Rising Stars, including 2011 Tony Award winner, Nikki M. James who grew up in Livingston and won for Book of Mormon. New committee formed to induct a Class of 2014.
Members of the James Caldwell Athletic Hall of Fame include the high school’s longtime athletic director and an Olympic gold medalist. But the last time anyone was inducted was 1997. That is about to change thanks to a newly formed committee, which plans to resurrect the Hall of Fame and announce a Class of 2014 later this year. Tom Caravela, a lifelong resident of West Caldwell, has been selected to chair the 2014 James Caldwell High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. Caravela was a standout football player and wrestler for the Chiefs. After graduating from James Caldwell in 1986, he went on to wrestle for Rutgers University.
