Tuscany Offers True Italian Fare

The restaurant may not be cheap, but the food is well worth the cost.

For several weeks, a merry band of cooks and businessmen have been transforming the former site of Five Guys on Valley Road in Upper Montclair into an oasis of authentic Italian fare. The result has been Tuscany, a new restaurant with Tuscan gold walls graced with Italian landscape paintings that puts the focus squarely on fresh pasta. I admit I was a bit skeptical of a lunch menu that includes mostly dishes costing $14 or $16. Indeed, the cheapest item is the Melanzane Toscane, or thinly sliced layers of eggplant with fresh plum tomato sauce, pecorino, and Italian basil, for $10. Another pasta and eggplant dish, Lasagnette Toscana, is priced at $12. But almost everything else on the lunch menu costs more. Dinner, of course, is another …

Sofia's Named Best Italian by Readers

Patch readers sing praises of North Caldwell restaurant's food and service.

While Caldwell and West Caldwell boast numerous restaurants, North Caldwell is home to just one, Sofia's. The husband-and-wife-owned Italian restaurant may be tucked away on Main Street near the Passaic County border, but that hasn't stopped Caldwell area diners from discovering and returning again and again to this favorite spot.  Now those satisfied Sofia-philes have declared it the "Best Italian" in the Caldwells, according to the first Reader's Choice "Best of" poll on Caldwells Patch. The passion for authentic Italian fare was evident, with several readers proclaiming there's far too much of it here to pick just one restaurant. Sophia's is hit or miss, and very mediocre. I have no idea how they won best in town. What poor taste these readers must have. Divinia > Sophia's, By far.   more ›
