The Weekender: Hanukkah Begins, Funk at NJPAC and Essex County House Tour

Jewish Festival of Lights begins at sundown Saturday with party in West Orange.

Caldwell Towns Light Trees This Weekend

A guide to this weekend's tree lighting traditions.

It's the first weekend in December, which means it's time to light the Christmas trees in the Caldwells. Here's a guide to this weekend's festivities in Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell. Caldwell: Santa Claus will be escorted up Bloomfield Avenue by the Caldwell Fire Department to the Caldwell green (at Roseland Avenue) where he will lead caroling and the countdown to the tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. Photo-ops with Santa, hot chocolate and cookies, and a holiday auction will follow inside the Caldwell Firehouse. North Caldwell: The borough Christmas tree and menorah at town hall will be lit on Sunday, Dec. 2. Festivities will take place between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Santa will arrive on a North Caldwell firetruck. …

Paper Mill Comes Alive With 'The Sound of Music'

Enjoyable revival sets festive tone for the holidays.

Despite its utter lack of thematic connection to the holiday season, The Sound of Music always feels like a good fit when the sleigh bells start to ring. Paper Mill Playhouse scored a hit with this beloved family musical in 2003, when it closed on Dec. 14. This year, it’s back with full billing as a limited holiday engagement, which will extend to Dec. 30. James Brennan, who directed the 2003 revival, is back with an all-new cast and a more attractive and three-dimensional set. Holiday Lights Spectacular Returns to Turtle Back Zoo

Admission is free to this family-friendly annual event.

The following information is from the Essex County Executive's Office.  The Sixth Annual Essex County Holiday Lights Spectacular is back at the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. The exhibit features 50 animal and holiday-themed figures including bears, tigers and elephants illuminated by over 100,000 lights, along with holiday lights designed to look like wooden soldiers, stars and winter scenes. The event runs at the Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex (560 Northfield Avenue) through January 1st. Donations Sought for Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department Tricky Tray

Fundraiser with Santa photo-op, hot chocolate and cookies takes place each year after tree lighting on the Caldwell Green.

Santa's Little Firefighter Elves need your help. The Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department Holiday Bazaar Committee is currently soliciting baskets and donations for the annual Holiday Tricky Tray. This year's fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3, immediately following the tree lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. on the Caldwell Green. During November, members of the fire department will be stopping by local businesses to pick up donations for the Tricky Tray, such as merchandise or services.
