Basketball team has successful final season in Catholic Youth Organization.
St. Aloysius' 8th grade girls basketball team walked away with a second place finish in their final Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) game, a nail biter which came down to the last minute of play. "I am so proud of how far this team has come and how well they worked as a team," commented Head Coach Steve Bledsoe. As the season began its second half, the team had a 50-50 record, but a winning streak saw them finish regular play with 8 wins and 4 losses. Seeded fourth in the playoffs, the team came away with a strong win in the preliminary round followed by a victory over No. 1 seed Transfiguration of Bergenfield in the semi-finals. Senior becomes only sixth player in school history known to reach milestone.

Mount Saint Dominic Academy basketball player Camille McPherson is only the sixth player known to score 1,000 points in the school’s history, according to a release from the Mount’s Athletic Department. The Lions senior reached the milestone Tuesday when the Mount defeated Bloomfield Tech, 66-49. Camille scored 17 points in the game. Camille is the third player to surpass 1,000 points under head basketball coach Jerry Aquino. The Mount was defeated, 41-36, by Shabazz in the Essex County Tournament semi-final round on Feb. 16. The seventh-seeded Lions open up in the state tournament Non Public A sectional on Feb. 26, at 7 p.m., versus Union Catholic.

Caldwell girls basketball finishes season with a 16-9 record.
The Shabazz Bulldogs (26-1) showed why they are the No. 1 team in New Jersey basketball Thursday night. The Lady Bulldogs displayed tenacious defense and outstanding team offense in defeating the Caldwell Chiefs 67-21 in the second round of the Group 2 Section 2 2012 NJSIAA Tournament played at Malcolm X. Shabazz High School. Aliyyah Handford led the balanced scoring attack of the Shabazz team by contributing 12 points. Ricshar Benjamin scored 11 points and De'Ashia Jones contributed 10 points. Caldwell seniors Meredith Weber scored 6 points and Annie Mergner contributed 4 points, both playing hard in the last basketball game of their high school careers.
