Former Knight Makes History at Muhlenberg

West Essex graduate Kayleigh Thies led team in goals and assists.

West Essex graduate Kayleigh Thies, a sophomore on the Muhlenberg College field hockey team, was recently named to the All-Centennial Conference second team. Thies returned as a forward in 2012 and started in all 16 games, according to a release from the school. She led the team in both goals (5) and assists (6), contributing 16 points to her previous 27 career points. The former Knight is only the second player in Muhlenberg history to achieve double digits in goals (16) and assists (11) after two seasons.  Thies is a resident of North Caldwell. Muhlenberg finished the 2012 season with a 9-7 record, four wins better than in 2011.

Chiefs, Knights Post-Season Action Continues

Knights Field Hockey earns NJSIAA state title. Caldwell soccer teams advance in state tournament. Chiefs and Knights football play first round this weekend.

It’s a big week for post-season high school sports. Time to sport school colors and cheer on the local teams. FIELD HOCKEY West Essex Field Hockey captured the NJSIAA North Jersey Group 2, Section 1 championship Wednesday with a 4-1 win over High Point in North Caldwell. Amanda Cassera scored three goals and Kaitlyn Struss scored once for the Knights. The team finished the season 20-1-0. SOCCER The Caldwell girls soccer team will host Hanover Park in the semi-final round playoff game of the NJSIAA State Tournament Friday. The game will be played at the Kiwanis Oval, Provost Square in Caldwell, at 4 p.m. The winner of Friday’s match will advance to the Group 2 Section 2 championship. West Essex Field Hockey Wins County Tourney

Knights defeat Montclair Mounties to earn seventh county championship.

West Essex defeated Montclair 4-0 to win the Essex County Field Hockey Tournament at Watchung Field in Montclair on Saturday. Junior forward Kaitlyn Struss scored three goals and sophomore forward Alyssa Menendez recorded one goal and an assist. Junior mid-fielder Steph Pezzuti, senior forward Amanda Cassera and sophomore forward Gabby Girardi all contributed with one assist. Stellar performances by West Essex junior mid-fielders Sophia Haramis, Jackie Renda and Steph Pezzuti gave West Essex possession of the ball the majority of the game. The defensive trio of juniors Marissa Cafone, Caroline Fiore and Kelly Cousoulis allowed the Mounties only one shot on goal. Freshmen Paige Innarella tended the net for the Knights registering one save. …

Knights Advance to TOC Finals

Cafone scores twice to lead West Essex field hockey.

There's still one more game left in the West Essex field hockey season. The biggest game of the year. The Knights knocked off Shore Regional in the Tournament of Champions semifinals on Thursday afternoon, 4-1, propelled by two first-half goals from Natalie Cafone. Amanda Cassera opened the scoring for West Essex, finishing off a pass from Alexis Miller less than seven minutes into play. At 16:51, Cafone put the Knights up 2-0, and then put the locals up by three goals later in the half. "Natalie is a dynamic player.
