The West Orange Police Department is investigating an attempted luring, which happened Thursday morning at around 8 a.m. Police responded to the corner of Valley Road and Pillot Place where multiple teenage girls, waiting for the bus to West Orange High School, were approached by a man, according to a West Orange Police Department desk sergeant. A student told police the man, driving a silver convertible, stopped at the bus stop and asked the students to come into the car.  The membership of the Newark Teachers Union Wednesday night voted to accept a new contract that will make the city the first school district in the state to offer teachers bonus pay based on student performance.  A West Orange council member was arrested in Verona and …

Homicide in West Orange, Newark weapon, drug arrest, Belleville church steeple braced.

Authorities are investigating a bank robbery Tuesday at the Valley National Bank on Bloomfield Avenue. Just before 1 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect entered the bank at 22 Bloomfield Ave. and passed a note to the teller reading "Have gun. Give me money," according to Deputy Chief Mark Minichini of the Belleville Police Department. The suspect made off with the contents of the teller's drawer and fled north on foot on Belmont Avenue. Exact proceeds have not been determined, Minichini said. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a West Orange woman on Oct. 31. Attempted Murder Charge, School Purse Thief Caught in Top Essex News

A Newark man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing another man with a knife last month in Bloomfield, police said. Charles Taylor, 24, is accused of attacking a 30-year-old Bloomfield man Sept. 13 and stabbing him in the neck and shoulder, according to Bloomfield Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Anthony Servedio. The Bloomfield man's name was not released. A New Providence man was arrested following a series of thefts from employees at The Children’s Institute’s Verona campus, police said. In the most recent incident, police were called to the campus, located at 1 Sunset Ave., after money was stolen from a purse on Oct. 15. Historic Newark Teacher Merit Pay, Missing Montclair Parking Funds in Top Essex News

State senator urges investigation of Bloomfield travel agency, pit bull deal proposed.

An historic pact, the first in New Jersey to include merit pay for Newark teachers based on student performance, is close to being signed, Newark Teachers Union President Joseph Del Grosso told the Associated Press Thursday. The deal would make the district's high-performing teachers eligible for up to $12,500, Del Grosso said. He said the merit pay will be funded by the $100 million donation to the state's largest school district by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. The Montclair Parking Authority may have $100,000 in missing uiltity bills, according to a report released this week. I hate to be a cynic here as much as anyone, but I have a feeling that a good portion of the merit pay will go to teacher's favored by administrators or those with family and connections. They'll throw a handful of truly deserving teachers a bone just to make it look legitimate.   more ›

On Monday, the Newark Bears announced pop sensation Justin Bieber was set to perform at the Newark Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for the team's second annual "Stadium of Screams." Bieber was scheduled to perform acoustic Oct. 28 and meet with season ticket holders afterward. But now, it seems a performance by the "Boyfriend" crooner is a no go. A mother and her five children were forced to jump out of a third-floor window when a fire broke out early Wednesday morning in their Newark apartment. The blaze, which began at 12:24 a.m. in the bathroom of the apartment at 224 S.
