These gingerbread houses are not just edible, they are educational, too. More than 51 entries were received in the Essex County Environmental Center’s Eighth Annual Gingerbread Homes and Habitats Contest. The entries were divided into four categories—Individual Child; Group/Family; Adult Non-Professional and Adult Professional—and winners were recognized Saturday at the center in Roseland. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness about nature with a holiday theme, according to Essex County Excecutive Joseph N. DiVincenzo. The Essex County Environmental Center held its annual Octoberfest celebration on Saturday. Visitors took canoe trips on the Passaic River and nature walks in Essex County’s West Essex Park. There was a petting zoo, gardening tips, a live beehive display, woodturning and pumpkin carving demonstrations, nature arts and crafts and display tables from a variety of eco-vendors. Participating in OctoberFest with the Environmental Center were the County’s partner agencies: New Jersey Audubon, Essex County Master Gardeners, Essex County Beekeepers, 4-H Club, Essex County Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Essex County Nature Photographers, New Jersey Woodturners Association and the Essex County Environmental Commission. Looking for something fun to do this weekend while enjoying the outdoors? The Essex County Environmental Center will be holding an OctoberFest celebration on Saturday—a free daylong event—that will include a multitude of activities. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the environmental center, located at 621B Eagle Rock Ave., in Roseland. Admission is free and OctoberFest will be held rain or shine. Visitors can go on canoe trips on the Passaic River or nature walks in Essex County’s West Essex Park. Essex County Environmental Center hosts two-week Butterfly Tent Safari.
The Butterfly Tent Safari at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland invites visitors to get up close and personal with butterflies native to New Jersey. The tent includes about 50 butterflies, including monarchs, painted ladies and swallowtails, surrounded by some of their favorite flowers. According to the center's naturalist David Alexander, some of the monarchs are raised at the Environmental Center while others are ordered for the display. Visitors are able to interact with the butterflies by picking them up on a sponge that has been dipped in purple Gatorade. Essex County Environmental Center offers summer nature programs and clubs for kids.
Let’s face it. In addition to the wonderful smell of roses and the harmonic hoots of owls, nature has an icky side. Mud and moss, crawly things and bats are all part of the package, maybe that is why kids love it so much. As the school year comes to a close, the Essex County Environmental Center is offering a wide selection of clubs and programs for kids, many of them offering hands-on experiences with both the lovely and the icky facets of nature. Located on Eagle Rock Avenue within the West Essex Park in Roseland, the center sits along the Passaic River among 1,360 acres of undeveloped wetlands, providing many opportunities for exploration and observation of nature at its best. Winners announced in Essex County Environmental Center's 2011 Sustainable Homes & Habitats Gingerbread Contest. Plus, recipe and instructions for making your own eco-friendly design.
Candy canes were fashioned into windmills, edible solar panels were installed on rooftops, and Oreo cookies became wheels for miniature bicycles. Essex County Environmental Center's annual Sustainable Homes & Habitats Gingerbread Contest requires entries to have at least three sustainable building design elements—but many entrants went above and beyond showing off their creativity and knowledge about the environment.
