Fairfield Woman Convicted of Murdering 81-Year-Old Mother

After Tina Lunney killed her mother Marie Zoppi, she used her credit cards to pay off debts to a collection agency and for a family vacation to North Carolina.

A Fairfield woman was convicted Friday of strangling her 81-year-old mother with a necktie in 2009, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.  Tina Lunney, 45, was found guilty of murdering her mother Marie Zoppi after a three-week trial in Newark. The jury convicted Lunney of murder after a day and a half of deliberation.  Lunney will be sentenced on July 26 in Newark. Assistant Prosecutor Dawn Dimonetti said she will seek a life sentence based upon the heinous nature of the murder, according to a press release.  “This case was all about the money,” Simonetti said in a press release. “Tina Lunney is a heartless killer who crushed her frail mother’s ribs and brutally strangled her with her husband’s necktie. Police Conducting Seatbelt Click It or Ticket Campaign

'Using a seat belt is the simplest way for a driver and his or her passengers to protect themselves when traveling,' said Gary Poedubicky, acting director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

Police departments throughout Essex County are warning drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts or they can expect a ticket.  Local departments will be participating in the national Click It or Ticket seatbelt campaign to crack down on unbuckled motorists and passengers through June. 2.  The annual initiative includes high visibility law enforcement seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, as well as local and national publicity designed to ensure that drivers and passengers recognize the life-saving value of seat belts.   The enforcement effort in Essex County is being coordinated through the Essex County College Police Academy Community Traffic Safety Program and is funded through a grant from the New Jersey Division of …

The Caldwell Borough Council introduced a $11,532,789 municipal budget on Tuesday that included 1.4 percent tax hike. This means the average Caldwell home assessed at $421,455 will pay about $42 more in municipal taxes than in 2012.  Wharton-based sewer cleaning company paid nearly $150 for overbilling to borough. The camp will be for students in pre-K through fifth grade and extend from July 8 through Aug. 16. Essex County Hosts Household Waste Collection

County residents can bring hazardous materials to Cedar Grove from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Essex County Utilities Authority will host its spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, May 4, in Cedar Grove. The collection takes place from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Essex County Fleet Maintenance Yard at 99 W. Bradford Ave., officials said.  The event is free for Essex County residents only and proof of residency is required. “There are some materials that should be removed from our regular waste stream because of their hazardous nature. 4 Percent of Essex County Bridges Deemed Structurally Deficient

Report says cost to repair all 908 spans would exceed $874 million.

Essex County’s aging bridges are in need of repair, but the cost to do the work would exceed $874 million, a new report released Monday shows.  Of the county’s 908 bridges, about 4 percent have been rated structurally deficient, according to a report on the issue-driven website NJ Spotlight.   Additionally, 1-in-5, or 20 percent of the bridges are considered to be functionally obsolete and not in line with current lane and shoulder standards, or occasionally flood, according to National Bridge Inventory data. The average age of an Essex County bridge is 50 years old. About one in four bridges in the state are either in poor condition or unable to handle current traffic loads, the data shows.
