Candidates won't know results of tight council race until Monday afternoon.
More than a week after the election, Essex County officials continue to count “buckets” of votes coming in from post offices that were flooded or without power after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region, County Clerk Chris Durkin said Wednesday. In addition to mail-in votes, emailed, faxed and provisional ballots remain to be counted. Final results will not be available until the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 19, the deadline set for mail-in votes by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Caldwell resident Susan Vezza, a small business owner and teacher, will run for a seat on the Caldwell Council on the same ticket as Democratic candidate Edward Durkin this November. Durkin announced in a release Saturday that Vezza will replace Stephen Modica, who officially withdrew from the race last Thursday. The Essex County Democratic Committee accepted Vezza as the new candidate on Friday night, and she will be officially added to the ballot on Monday, according to the release. “We are excited to get the campaign under way,” Durkin stated. “Susan is a great addition to the ticket.” Vezza is a longtime resident of Caldwell. Caldwell's Edward Durkin says he will announce candidate's name in coming weeks.
Caldwell Democratic council candidate Edward Durkin will have a running mate in November, but it won’t be Stephen Modica. Durkin told Patch last week that while Modica stated his intentions to drop out of the race in June, he has not officially done so. He said he expects the announcement to come later this month. Durkin said his new running mate, who he only revealed is a woman, will be announced once Modica has officially stepped down. “I have found a very viable candidate,” Durkin said. “There is competition.
