Cycling enthusiasts, rejoice! You can soon take your bike aboard trains at any station in New Jersey. It's thanks to a newly relaxed bicycle onboarding policy from NJ Transit. The policy is effective July 1. Cyclists should note that this new policy does not mean you can take your standard (non-collapsible) bike on any train at any time. There are restrictions for certain holidays and peak travel times. If evening service proves popular, bus company says it will become permanent.
DeCamp will begin testing evening service from Wall Street to West Caldwell starting later this month, according to an alert posted on the bus company's website. Beginning Monday, Jan. 23, DeCamp will pick up commuters at 5:15 p.m. on weekdays from Battery Place and bring them to stops in Clifton, Montclair, Verona, Caldwell and West Caldwell. DeCamp currently operates a morning service to downtown with a bus leaving Kirkpatrick Lane in West Caldwell on 6:15 a.m. weekdays and traveling east to Caldwell, Verona, Montclair and Clifton before heading into the city. The route can be viewed here. The downtown route is essentially a modified #33/#66 route that currently runs from West Caldwell to Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. …

How much time do you spend getting to your job? According to recent U.S. Census data, Caldwell and West Caldwell workers spend an average of 27.1 and 26.8 minutes respectively commuting. (Figures are not available for North Caldwell.) The average commute for New Jersey workers is 36.5 minutes—not as high as Chatham (slightly more than 38 minutes) or Marlboro (44 minutes), but longer than commutes in a few South Jersey towns like Washington (16.7 minutes).
