The West Caldwell Pool Utility is now accepting badge applications for the 2013 season, which opens Memorial Day weekend and lasts through Labor Day weekend. Badges allow access to the township's two facilities, Cedar Street and Westville. Membership rates remain flat from last year, Councilman Joseph Cecere, chairperson of the West Caldwell Pool Utility, said Tuesday. A family membership for West Caldwell is $390 when paid by Friday, May 10, and $425 after that date. Family memberships for residents of Caldwell, Roseland and Essex Fells are $475 when paid by May 10, and $510 after that date. West Caldwell is soliciting quotations from vendors interested in operating the concessions stands at the township's two pools, according to an announcement posted on www.westcaldwell.com. The township is looking for the vendor who is willing to pay the highest fee for the opportunity to run the snack bars at Cedar Street and Westville pools. The vendor must provide a proposed menu along with prices, and agree to a number of rules. For instance, the snack bars must be open whenever the pools are and have a manager at least 21 year of age present at all times at each location. Township is creating committee to advise on future of two pools.

The Township of West Caldwell seeks residents interested in participating in a Citizens Group which will advise on the future of the township's two pools. Councilman Joe Cecere said at Tuesday night's council meeting that five residents are needed to volunteer on the committee. The group will meet regularly over the next few years to help inform decisions and plan how to best utilize Westville and Cedar Street pools. Anyone interested in participating on the committee, should contact town hall at 973-226-2300. The township's governing body has been discussing for some time how to make the most of the two pools and their properties. Membership to West Caldwell pools is open to town residents as well as residents of Caldwell and Roseland.

West Caldwell Council makes final decision under advisement of insurance carrier.
While the West Caldwell Council did try to work out a compromise, the council's final decision is a ban on all flotation devices at the Cedar Street Pool, regardless if the devices are "dime store" swimmies or U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests. Councilman Joseph Cecere, a member of the Pool Utility Committee, said, "We discussed it with our Joint Insurance Fund (JIF). Their written recommendation from their safety experts was no flotation devices." Cecere made his remarks to West Caldwell resident Andy Brown at Tuesday night's council meeting. Bring donations for West Caldwell swim team collection to Cedar Street pool this week.
The West Caldwell-Caldwell and Madison swim teams are competing in and out of the water this week. While the Dolphins will swim against Madison this Thursday at Cedar Street Pool, the teams are also going head-to-head in Swim for Food, a fun competition in the North Jersey Summer Swim League to see who can collect the most food for local pantries. The community can help the Dolphins achieve their 500-pound goal by dropping non-perishable food donations in a box which will be located near the entrance of Cedar Street Pool on Wednesday and Thursday. West Caldwell Council going out for second round of bids after expressing dissatisfaction with past vendor.
The West Caldwell Council tabled a resolution awarding the 2012 pool concession stand contract to Bagelwich Bagels and Deli citing dissatisfaction with the vendor's past performance. Bagelwich, one of two bidders and the only bidder to satisfy the bid requirements, was criticized based on past performance at the town's two pools, Cedar Street and Westville. The council decided to go out for a second round of bids. "I hate to vote down resolutions," West Caldwell Council President Stan Hladik said. Hladik said he was not happy with Bagelwich's service in previous years, particularly when limited staff resulted in long lines during peak hours.
