Five out of six cars reported stolen to West Caldwell Police since Jan. 1 were left unlocked with keys inside, according to police. The latest thefts were reported on Monday, April 8, at 11:30 p.m., on Taylor Drive, a quiet residential road. Homeowners reported an Acura and Cadillac Escalade, which were left unlocked, stolen from their driveways. Police Chief Michael Bramhall said six car thefts by mid-April is trending high for the township. A BMW, which was left running in a 7-Eleven parking lot on Bloomfield Avenue, was reported stolen in March. Residents are being reminded to keep their cars locked at night after two attempted thefts were reported in the borough Wednesday, officials said. Police believe thieves in both incidents rummaged through the glove compartment looking for a valet key. A resident of Rosemont Court reported at 8 a.m. that someone had gone through her 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which had been left unlocked in the driveway. She told police she found the glove box open and items missing. Police later found the registration and owner's manual for the vehicle discarded several hundred feet away at the intersection of Hamilton Drive East. With the wind chill making it feel close to zero degrees this week, it's tempting to start your car and leave it running in the driveway while you finish getting ready in the morning. But consider yourself warned. Not only is this practice bad for the environment and costly in gas, it makes your car an easy target for thieves. Police are searching for two cars that were taken from driveways Thursday morning in Cedar Grove. The Acura and Jeep were both reportedly left running and unattended. A similar theft was reported in West Caldwell on Whitaker Place earlier this month. Police say two SUVS were taken from one North Caldwell driveway, a Mercedes-Benz that was left running was stolen in West Caldwell.
Two SUVS and a sedan—all with keys left inside—were reported stolen Friday morning in the Caldwells, according to police. A homeowner in North Caldwell said a black Mercedes-Benz and a black Lexus, both SUVS, were reported missing from a driveway at 7:20 a.m. The trucks were left open with the keys inside, according to Chief Mark Deuer. Deuer said the cars are believed to have been stolen sometime between 11:15 p.m. Thursday and early Friday morning. On the south end of West Caldwell near the Roseland border, a Whitaker Place resident reported her four-door Mercedes-Benz was stolen from her driveway at about 6:53 a.m. Friday. Three car thefts reported in North Caldwell in last week. Police urging residents to lock their cars.
Police are reminding residents to lock their cars after three unlocked high-end vehicles were reported stolen from North Caldwell in the last week. All three cars were taken from driveways during early morning hours, according to Det. Sgt. Bill Texas. A Mercedes SUV, which was left unlocked with the keys inside, was reported missing on Thursday, August 23. Another Mercedes SUV, also left unlocked, was reported stolen on Wednesday, August 22. The third car, an Infiniti sedan, was reportedly taken from a driveway on Saturday, August 18. In all cases owners woke up in the morning to find their cars gone.
