North Caldwell Police Make Arrest in Rash of Car Burglaries

Police say Scotch Plains man has allegedly taken items from a number of unlocked cars parked at West Essex Regional High School over the past month.

A 19-year-old Scotch Plains man, whom police say has been entering unlocked cars in a high school parking lot and taking wallets, jewelry and other valuables, was arrested Saturday during the Essex County Basketball Tournament. William Rivera was pulled over and arrested before leaving the West Essex Regional High School parking lot after police say an employee of the school witnessed him checking car doors while he walked around the lot with a woman. Shannon Flanagan, 20, of North Caldwell, was also arrested and charged with conspiracy. Rivera faces eight counts of theft to motor vehicles for one incident which allegedly took place Saturday as well as seven others reported at the school over the past month. Police Seek Clues in Pool Parking Lot Burglaries

Four women had pocketbooks stolen from cars at Westville Pool Friday.

The West Caldwell Police have no leads so far in their investigation of Friday’s multiple car burglaries at a town pool parking lot. One of the four victims who had her purse stolen from the Westville Pool lot said she had hidden her handbag under the passenger seat of her Lincoln MKX. The woman, who asked that her name not be used, said by Monday morning she had already cancelled her credit cards, obtained a new driver’s license, changed her car locks and repaired the broken window. The four women had their pocketbooks stolen from four separate cars between 1:45 and 3:15 p.m., according to police. The passenger car windows were broken in all cases in order to snatch the pocketbooks, each containing cash, credit cards and other valuables. …

I happened to be at the pool that day during the time the breakins occurred (however, my car was not broken into). It was scary that none of us heard anything and only became aware of it, after it occurred. From what I understand, the vehicles were all locked (which is why the windows were broken to gain access). Purses Nabbed from Cars in Pool Lot

West Caldwell Police investigating multiple car burglaries.

Several women had their purses stolen while they were parked at a West Caldwell town pool Friday afternoon.  The burglar or burglars smashed the windows of four cars parked at the Westville Pool between 1:45 and 3:15 p.m., according to the West Caldwell Police. A pocketbook was nabbed from each of the cars. The purses contained cash, credit cards, driver’s licenses and other personal items, police said. The victims are women from West Caldwell, Roseland, Fairfield and East Hanover. All four cars were parked in the same area of the Westville Avenue lot.   Police said a local church group that had been handing out flyers in the lot Friday was investigated but no connection was found to the car burglaries.
