Former Board of Education president and retired Lincoln School secretary endorsed by Caldwell Democratic Committee.

Democrats Maureen McNish and Grace Kerrigan have declared their candidacy in the November Caldwell Council elections, the Caldwell Democratic Committee announced Tuesday. McNish, a former Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education member, and Kerrigan, a retired employee of the school district, were endorsed by the Caldwell Democratic Committee Monday night. The Democrats will vie for two open seats on the council currently held by Republicans Tom O’Donnell and John Coyle. The Republicans have not formally announced their candidates, although O'Donnell has stated he intends to seek re-election.  McNish, a resident of Ravine Avenue, served three terms on the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education, where she was appointed president for one…

Durkin and Hauser Win Caldwell Race

Official results of borough council race come nearly two weeks after election.

Story updated at noon on Thursday, Nov 22. Democrat Edward Durkin and Republican incumbent Richard Hauser waited nearly two weeks to learn Monday they won the Caldwell Council race, which was too close to call when the machine votes were counted on election night. Durkin received a total of 1,649 votes while Hauser received 1,628 votes, Essex County Clerk Chris Durkin said by phone Monday. Their running mates, Republican incumbent Peter Murray and Democrat Susan Vezza received 1,616 and 1,575 votes, respectively, the clerk said. The wait didn't make the win any less sweet for Durkin, 31, a lifelong Caldwell resident and first time candidate for council. Durkin, who has worked as a financial consultant and investment advisor, will complete …

County Clerk: Only Caldwell Remains to be Called

Candidates won't know results of tight council race until Monday afternoon.

More than a week after the election, Essex County officials continue to count “buckets” of votes coming in from post offices that were flooded or without power after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region, County Clerk Chris Durkin said Wednesday. In addition to mail-in votes, emailed, faxed and provisional ballots remain to be counted. Final results will not be available until the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 19, the deadline set for mail-in votes by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Only four candidates are holding their breath until Monday, the two Democrats and two incumbent Republicans vying for two open seats on the Caldwell Council. “Caldwell is the only race in the county that is waiting to be called,” Durkin said Wednesday. With the machine …

Caldwell Council Race Results Up in Air

Early results show a Republican and Democratic split.

The Caldwell Council race was too close to call Tuesday night and might not be decided for many days. With all districts reporting, Republican incumbent Richard Hauser and Democratic candidate Edward Durkin were in the lead for the two open seats on the borough council. Hauser received 1,503 votes and Durkin had 1,500 votes, according to early results posted by the Essex County Clerk. Republican incumbent Peter Murray was in third place with 1,483 votes and Democratic candidate Susan Vezza was in fourth place with 1,446 votes. None of the candidates would concede Tuesday night. If Durkin and Hauser emerge the winners, the council will be split between both political parties. Caldwell Republicans Drop Borough Emails From Re-Election Website

Democratic councilman questions whether elected officials should use town's email system for campaigning.

Republican Caldwell councilmen running for re-election have taken borough emails down from their website after another councilman questioned whether it is proper to use the town’s email system for campaigning. Councilman John Kelley, a Democrat, said at Tuesday night’s council meeting he was concerned about Councilmen Rich Hauser and Peter Murray listing their town emails to communicate with voters. He also questioned what he called a possible conflict of interest created by having a borough employee actively involved in their campaign. Hauser and Murray have called both allegations unfounded. In a prepared statement, Kelley said Tuesday the councilmen’s email communications should be reviewed, and since the meeting an Open Public Records …
