Andrew Carnegie spoke of "doing real and permanent good in this world." His words were inscribed in the award presented to Former New Jersey Governor and Immediate Past Chairman of the Carnegie Corporation Thomas H. Kean at the recent Mayors' Legacy for Literacy dinner held at the Green Brook Country Club in North Caldwell. The fundraiser held last month for the Caldwell Public Library was co-hosted by Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing and former Mayor Susan Gartland. Former N.J. Governor and Sen. Richard Codey presented the award to Gov. Kean. Between 1883 and 1929, 2,509 Carnegie libraries were funded by Carnegie, including the Caldwell Library. Proceeds from the dinner will help supplement the library’s increasingly tight budget.

Lincoln Elementary School students blew away the competition in the recent Caldwell and West Caldwell Library Card Sign-Up contest. The challenge, created by the libraries to encourage students to access their local libraries, pitted the four Caldwell-West Caldwell elementary schools against each other. Students had a little over a month to register for library cards or fill out a form indicating that they were already cardholders. Lincoln came out on top with 72% of students registered for their own library cards. Wilson Elementary School came in a distant second with 52% and Washington and Jefferson followed with 50% of the students registered for library cards.

The Caldwell Public Library is currently participating in Food for Fines. From now until Saturday, Dec. 15, library patrons can erase their outstanding library fines by making a contribution to the local food pantry. "While we've run this program in the past, we feel it's especially important in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy," Library Director Adele Puccio stated in a release. The program was originally set to run until Dec. 1 but due to the continued need in the community, the Library has extended Food for Fines until Dec. 15. For each overdue fine, bring in a non-perishable item and fines will be waived. Please make sure that all items donated are within their use dates. All items collected will be given to the Caldwell Food Pantry. "…

Books for children from preschool through age fourteen are needed. A drop box is available in the Children's Room at the Caldwell Public Library, 268 Bloomfield Ave., in Caldwell. Started in 1991, “Books for Kids” is a statewide program sponsored by the New Jersey Library Association’s Children’s Services Section. This program is undertaken with the hope that all children will be able to experience the joy of reading books of their very own. Each year, with the help of more than 200 libraries, …

Caldwell-West Caldwell elementary schools are competing to see which school can hold the largest percentage of students with library cards by the end of the month. The winning school will be awarded with a special assembly presented by a favorite performer and paid for by the Caldwell and West Caldwell public libraries. The challenge is a way of encouraging the young readers to take advantage of their hometown libraries’ many resources. Students were reminded that library cards give them access to a wide selection of books, including mysteries, humorous stories, fantasy and non-fiction books on everything from sports and science to drawing and hobbies. But libraries are about much more than books, they were told. Movies, music, magazines …
