West Essex First Aid Squad members leapt into action last week when a 47-year-old man collapsed at The Oval and needed to be resuscitated before help could arrive. On June 12 during an adult league slow-pitch game at the baseball field, a West Essex man playing in the game went into cardiac arrest around 9:05 p.m. There were multiple West Essex First Aid Squad members playing in the game and spectating in the stands who immediately came to the man’s aid, according to police. The money will help the department purchase a new police car.
A local business recently made a big contribution to the Caldwell Police Department. Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning Inc. donated $7,000 to the Caldwell Police Department to fund the purchase of a new police car in the 2013 budget year. Four boys charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct after allegedly throwing potatoes through windows in Verona, Cedar Grove and Caldwell.
Four Cedar Grove teens have been charged for their alleged involvement in a potato-throwing spree in Verona, Cedar Grove and Caldwell in late March that damaged several properties, police said. The teens, ages 16 and 17, were charged on Wednesday, May 1, with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct following an investigation by Cedar Grove police. Their names were not released because of their ages. “The juveniles were processed and released to the custody of their guardians pending juvenile court proceedings,” police said. Police in the towns reported three incidents between Thursday, March 28 and Sunday, March 31 involving broken house windows and a damaged car where a potato was later found. Caldwell Police Department seeks to be permanent drop-off location for unwanted, expired drugs.
The Caldwell Police Department collected nearly 70 pounds of medication during the recent Operation Take Back New Jersey, Chief James Bongiorno said Monday. Bongiorno called the collection a success and said his goal is to make Caldwell a permanent drop-off site for unwanted and expired drugs. A total of 69 pounds were dropped off by local residents, including many senior citizens, during the four-hour collection Saturday. The drugs were turned over to the New Jersey Drug Enforcement Administration, Bongiorno said. The chief is working to have a permanent drop box installed in the lobby of police headquarters at 1 Provost Square with a 24-hour security camera. The cause of death of a Caldwell woman who was found unattended in her home Saturday remains under investigation, although the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Monday it may have been medical. The preliminary investigation shows the 26-year-old woman may have "suffered a medical event," Katherine Carter, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office, said Monday. A final autospy report is pending.
Incident reported by an employee of the Caldwell Community Center remains under investigation.

Caldwell Community Center members had their workouts interrupted Monday morning when the building was evacuated due to a report of a suspicious incident, a police official said. A report of suspicious activity was made by an employee of the community center at 1 Provost Square, at 9:02 a.m., Caldwell Police Chief James Bongiorno said. A check of the building by the Essex County Sheriff's Department K9 Unit and Bomb Squad did not reveal anything unusual, Bongiorno said. Members were told to remove their belongings and all bags were checked upon exiting the building. By 11 a.m., activity in the center had returned to normal. The incident remains under investigation. UPDATE: Cause of Caldwell Woman's Death May Have Been Medical The death of a 26-year-old Caldwell woman is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. The woman was found dead in her home on Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said Sunday. No charges have been filed and the "cause and manner" of the death is still pending as of Sunday night, officials said.

Surveillance images of a man police believe is responsible for the recenty robbery of a bank in Caldwell and an attempted robbery of a bank in West Orange were released Monday. The surveillance images from the PNC Bank in Caldwell, which was robbed on Thursday, at about 5:57 p.m., shows a man wearing a dark jacket, jeans and a baseball cap walking into the bank and going up to the teller. The man was described in a release from the FBI as a clean-shaven black man, in his late 20s, about 5-foot-6 inches to 5-foot-8 inches tall and about 140 lbs. with a thin build. A white powder discovered at a Caldwell middle school last week was determined to be Alka-Seltzer used in a science classroom, Caldwell-West Caldwell officials said Monday. Caldwell police evacuated Grover Cleveland Middle School Thursday around 4:30 p.m. as a precaution while police and Nutley Hazmat investigated a suspicious substance found by a custodian in a boys bathroom. The investigation determined the substance was harmless and possibly a vitamin powder. "Principal James Brown investigated further on Friday, and determined that some powdered Alka-Seltzer from a science lab experiment had been left in a bathroom," district officials said Monday.
