Can-Can Competition Results in Big Win for Caldwell Food Pantry

Local schools collect more than 7,700 non-perishable food items.

After a month of friendly competition, the results are in and the Caldwell-West Caldwell School District donated more than 7,700 canned goods and other non-perishable items to the Caldwell Food Pantry in time for the holiday season. Designed by the principals and supported by Superintendent Dr. James Heinegg, the idea for the competition was created when the administrators learned about the local food pantry’s diminished supplies following Hurricane Sandy. For the entire month of December, the schools held a friendly competition to see which school could donate the most items per student. Lincoln Elementary School held on to the lead until the very last week, when Washington, Wilson and Jefferson elementary schools pulled ahead in the …

Caldwell Food Pantry Won't Lose Home

The Bridge will also remain at 14 Park Ave., thanks to agreement in the works between Caldwell and the federal government.

The Caldwell Food Pantry and The Bridge will remain in their shared building after all. The pantry, which serves more than 50 local families, shares space at 14 Park Ave. with The Bridge, a non-profit counseling center located next door to the Caldwelll Post Office. However, it was not clear whether the food pantry could remain at its current location because the building's deed carries a restriction that it be used for recreational purposes and the pantry did not fit the criteria. Although the Grover Cleveland Senior Center once operated from 14 Park Ave., the current tenants do not satisfy the deed restriction, according to the Government Services Administration (GSA), which manages federal property. After a multi-year dispute, the GSA …

Caldwells Patch Collecting School Supplies

Drop off school items for local children to the Caldwell Farmers' Market Friday, August 17.

For many kids in the Caldwells, it’s hard to imagine the first day of school without a new backpack brimming with supplies. But there are families who will struggle to check all the items off a child’s classroom supply list. While shopping for your own children and grandchildren, pick up extra supplies for those in need this week. Bring them to the Caldwells Patch table at the Caldwell Farmers's Market on Friday, August 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. Backpacks, notebooks, binders, pencils, pens, and crayons are just some of the items suggested. There will be Patch giveaways as a thank you for your donation. The Caldwell Farmers Market is located in the Smull Avenue Parking Lot, behind the shops between Smull Avenue and Personete Street. For more …

Food Pantry Pleads for Donations

Help keep shelves stocked over the summer—and don't forget about food for pets.

Caldwell's Department of Human Services is making a plea to the community to help stock the shelves at the The Caldwell Food Pantry. "Summer is traditionally the worst time for food donations,” stated Maria Burak, Director of Caldwell Human Services. “While we have been successful so far in keeping food available for local families with community food drives, the need continues to be great.”    Last month, the pantry gave out 165 bags of food to more than 64 households.  Those households include 32 families that have 64 children in the Caldwell-West Caldwell school system as well as 15 senior citizens.    Jamie Campion, a local Girl Scout, is interested in expanding the pantry to serve another important member of the family—the family pet…

Merchants Team Up to Stock Up Pantry Shelves

The Caldwell Food Pantry, Jack’s Foodtown and the Caldwell Merchants Association come up with creative solution to make donating food easy.

The need for food and household items has never been greater in the Caldwell area as over 50 families struggle to make ends meet. The Caldwell Food Pantry is the resource for those needy families in Caldwell and West Caldwell, but the demand has now exceeded the supply and your help is critical. The Caldwell Merchants Association approached Jack Shakoor, owner of Jack’s Foodtown in Caldwell, and he was immediately willing to help and the “Be a Good Neighbor” campaign was launched. The program is simple: as you shop at Jack’s you will notice various items tagged with bright yellow signs stating, “The Caldwell Food Pantry Needs This Item.” Simply purchase those items and drop them in the clearly marked receptacle at the rear exit on your way…
