Caldwell’s annual “Tree Day” celebration will be held on Saturday, May 4, from noon to 3 p.m., at Borough Hall, 1 Provost Square. Numerous events, services, activities and offers will promote the importance and beauty of the town’s trees. Winners of the “Trees Are Terrific” contest will be announced and there will be a raffle for a $25 gift certificate to the Caldwell Nursery. “Trees are terrific!” is the theme of the Caldwell Environmental Commission’s Earth Day/Arbor Day 2013 Contest, according to Chairman Ann Marchioni. To broaden its reach, the contest is open to all Caldwell residents this year, Marchioni said, as well as Caldwell-West Caldwell students in age categories ranging from kindergarten through college. Grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8 are asked to answer the question, “What is your favorite tree and why?” with their submission. The winner in each of these categories will receive $25. Grades 9-12, college students and residents are posed the questions, “What is the value of trees? How do they inspire us?” The winner in these categories will receive $40. Entries could be anything from a poster or an essay …

The Borough of Caldwell and the Caldwell Environmental Commission will present a talk on green “Opportunities for Commercial, Industrial and Institutional Buildings” on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 2:15 p.m. All local businesses are welcome to attend the free discussion, which is also suitable for municipalities, schools and houses of worship. The talk will be led by Doug Shattuck P.E., a Senior Project Consultant at EAM Associates, a leader in commercial energy efficiencies. The Caldwell Environmental Commission and the Caldwell College Sustainability Committee, along with EcoMatters and Advanced Performance Solar, will offer a Solar Screening Event. The free event will take place at Werner Hall on the Caldwell College campus on Monday, Oct. 15, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Homeowners will learn about the benefits of solar energy and have the chance to be screened for a zero-cost solar installation that would provide them with discounted electricity. “We’re excited to host this event with Caldwell College and invite all members of the community to join us to see if their roof is suitable for solar,” stated Ann Marchioni, chairperson of Caldwell Environmental Commission, in a release. Caldwell educating residents about idling laws. Keeping parked cars running for more than three minutes is a no-no.
School is in, idling is out. That's the message Caldwell Environmental Commission Chairman Ann Marchioni is helping to spread. Marchioni held up one of the "No Idling Zone" signs which will be placed near school zones this fall at Tuesday night's meeting of the Caldwell Council. The signs are part of an effort to control idling in the borough which started with the council passing an anti-idling ordinance earlier this year. Not idling can save fuel and money, Marchioni said. "Idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting the engine. Ten minutes of idling uses as much fuel as traveling five miles," she said. Health benefits, she added, are another reason to turn engines off when cars are not in use. Idling causes air …

Caldwell Environmental Commission announces winners of recent Earth Day/Arbor Day contest.
The Caldwell Environmental Commission, in partnership with the Caldwell Public Library and the Caldwell Board of Health, ran a contest last month to promote clean air and clean water in the community. Student submissions included essays, posters and more encourgaing drivers not to idle their cars as a way to help the environment, as well as improve public health. Contest winners in various age categories were announced at a recent Caldwell Council meeting.
