Campers Collect Items for Troops Overseas

Donations presented to mother of U.S. Army Private Matt O'Hern of West Caldwell who has been deployed to Afghanistan.

Boxes and boxes of shaving gel, razors, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer and other items needed by American troops overseas are making their way from Caldwell to Afghanistan.  The toiletries, snacks and magazines were presented by Camp Caldwell Friday to Leanne O’Hern, mother of U.S. Army Private Matt O’Hern of West Caldwell, and will be making their way to her son and his unit. Matt served as the camp’s EMT last summer and up until a few weeks ago when he left New Jersey to train for his first deployment to Afghanistan. The campers made donations to show their support. “He’s put a Band-Aid on every kid here,” said Rob Paterson, director of the Caldwell Community Center, home of Camp Caldwell. “What’s important to me is that [the soldiers] …

Eagle Scout Candidate Spruces Up Provost Square

Troop 6 teen uses donations and advice from area residents and businesses to landscape area between Caldwell Library and Caldwell Community Center.

Caldwell got a little more beautiful this summer thanks to the work of one 16-year-old Eagle Scout candidate. Troop 6 member Colin Corliss spent the last several months clearing debris, conditioning the soil and landscaping an 800-square-foot area between the Caldwell Public Library and the Caldwell Community Center for his Eagle Scout project. The scout received a round of applause for his proposal in April from the borough's governing body, which gave the project the green light. Corliss, an incoming junior at Newark Academy, knew the job ahead was a big one. What he didn’t know was how quickly area residents and small business owners would lend their advice, support and donations to the project. “I thought that if I asked people that we…

With windows stretching to the ceiling providing natural light, clean lines and an exercise floor that goes easy on the knees, the new fitness room at the Caldwell Community Center is ready for members to bring it on. Completed in just two weeks, the new fitness studio combined the space that had been used as rooms for babysitting and a meeting room into the new studio on the first floor of the Center. A portion of the new studio overlooks the pool on one side with windows looking out at the Kiwanis Oval on two other walls. "We never had a place where we could offer real aerobics classes, and now we do," commented Caldwell Community Center Rob Patterson.  He added, "Members are happy." Patterson explained previously fitness classes were …

Caldwell Cannons Competing in Special Olympics

Special needs children training with volunteers at Caldwell Community Center.

The loud buzzer signals "Go!" and six special needs children, many of whom have been diagnosed with autism and related learning and emotional disabilities, leap into the water and begin to swim. Personal coaches shout encouragement and remind their swimmers to use their arms and to keep kicking and pulling forward. Parents watch excitedly from the sidelines, some with tears in their eyes. "This is fantastic!” exclaims Saddle Brook resident Dawn Pallotta, mother of 8-year-old, Angelina. “A few months ago, Angelina couldn’t swim more than a few strokes, and now she is training for the 50-meter competition!” she continued. Over and over, parents laud the swim program staff and volunteers at the Caldwell Community Center (CCC) in Caldwell for …
