Picture your father—or yourself—behind the wheel of one of these five upper-class conveyances.
Every now and again, 5 Cars likes to delve within the realm of imagination, and this week is one of those times. Father's Day is nigh, and we're thinking about how much our dad loved being pampered on his special day. We can see him grinning from ear to ear as he cruises picturesque winding roads behind the wheel of a sleek ride. So for this installment, we're featuring five new luxury cars now available for sale in and around Essex and Union counties. Our goal is to offer two things: For normal-folks readers it's an amusing intellectual exercise, and for certain readers with the inclination and the means, these mindblowing vehicles could make your Dad, Daddy, Papi, Pops or Father Dear super-happy on his big day. Hey, it beats another …

'Something like [the Girls Night Out event] is designed to make people aware of what is here and connects residents with the downtown,' said June Cowell, owner of Lovely Living Interiors and president of the Caldwell Merchants Association.
The rain did not dampen shoppers from filling Caldwell businesses Thursday evening for the first ever Girls Night Out. More than 25 local businesses in Caldwell's business district kept their doors open late on Thursday to encourage residents to shop locally. The event drew dozens of people out to shop and meet local merchants. June Cowell, owner of Lovely Living Interiors and president of the Caldwell Merchants Association, said the event reminds people to stay local when they are shopping. "People came out and that is a good thing," said Cowell. "Something like [Girls Night Out] is designed to make people aware of what is here and connects residents with the downtown." Drew Daniolowicz, co-owner of Hog Wild BBQ with his brother David…

The building that formally housed Valley National Bank has been empty since 2008.
It's now been more than five years since the former Valley National Bank, located at 307 Bloomfield Ave., shuttered its doors. So in this installment of Visions for Vacancies, The Caldwells Patch asks: What do you think should move into the building? All possibilities are on the table. We ask you to forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump-lot coverage rules, and all the other zoning jargon that puts most people to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community? The two-story lime-green building is located in the heart of Caldwell's busy business district. Whatever moves in will have plenty of available parking: there is a municipal parking lot located behind the…

24-year-old owner Elliott Marko shares a bagel recipe that you can make at home.
A local bagel store is taking a new twist on the traditional bagel. When Elliott Marko took over Bagel Loft, at 359 Bloomfield Ave., about seven months ago just after Hurricane Sandy hit, he began offering a specialty bagel that few if any other bagel shops in the area have: the French toast bagel. A big, puffy bagel filled with the taste of cinnamon and sugar, Marko said got the idea from working at other bagel shops but added his own take to it. “You can put butter on it, you can put cream cheese, but the best part is, you don’t have to put anything on it,” said Marko. “You can eat it just the way it is.” Marko, who steps into the bagel shop around 5:15 every morning to make fresh bagels, said the shop also offers deli sandwiches, …

Growing group of residents are 'ushering in a new, heart-centered, community-based economy which focuses on service, giving and receiving in balance.'
As the months and years roll by, life gets increasingly more busy, leaving us little time or energy to deal with all the tasks on our to-do lists. A new effort in Essex County seeks to give busy people a helping hand in getting things done—while modeling a new, human-friendly kind of economy. The Essex Time Exchange, based in Maplewood, is a time bank that allows people to swap talents and time to give and receive assistance for a wide variety of tasks, including computer programming, household chores, shopping, yard work, tutoring and more. The notion of exchanging time for services or goods dates back to the early cooperative movement in California in the 1930s, said Exchange President and Coordinator Mathilde Benveniste. She said the …

Some folks prefer cars from outside the U.S.
"It isn't unpatriotic to want a foreign car," said our friend David. "It's an affirmation of competition, the basis of the free enterprise system." That's David's story and he's sticking to it. And from a purely economic point of view, he is correct. Capitalism doesn't take geography into consideration; it's all about what the buyer prioritizes as most important. The best product, in his or her opinion, gets the sale. Nothing wrong with that if one isn't particularly jingoistic. And David is far from alone. While many drivers in this country are all about buying "American" as a show of patriotic pride, an act of loyalty to the construct or out of a belief that U.S.-made cars are the best available, a lot of others prefer cars from …

Shop expresses Essex Fells woman's love for all things preppy, modern and bohemian.
It’s apropos Nellie Criqui named her new shop after herself and her daughter — Nellie & Bean Mercantile is filled with things she and her 12-year-old love. “It’s preppy, it’s modern, it’s bohemian, but it’s me,” said Criqui Tuesday looking around the space long occupied by Nature’s Corner, at 840 Bloomfield Ave. in Verona. The shop is located in a charming old building with a farmhouse feel near the border of North Caldwell. Criqui painted the interior a crisp white and has set up vignettes around the shop highlighting items by categories, such as gifts for home, women, men, baby and tweens.
