While snow might have delayed the start of the three-day, 7th Annual Jamie Bliss Basketball Tournament, it could not stop the players, coaches, volunteers, parents and West Caldwell Mayor Joseph Tempesta from trekking out for the championship finals held Saturday at James Caldwell High School. Co-hosted by the Caldwell Athletic Club and the West Caldwell-Caldwell Recreation Department, the goal of the tournament is to raise money for the Jamie Bliss Scholarship Fund, given to selected graduating seniors at Caldwell High School. James "Jamie" Bliss was a junior at Caldwell when he collapsed and died during a routine football practice in October 2006. Lisa Merriweather, Director of Basketball for the Caldwells Athletic Club and the head …

Essex County kid makes moves on basketball courts in Bloomfield as an "old man."
Even as an old man, hometown kid Kyrie Irving looks like he will not lose a step in his game—at least that is the way it seems in a new Pepsi Max commercial. Reigning Rookie of the Year in the NBA, Irving, who grew up in West Orange and played basketball at Montclair Kimberley Academy in Montclair, has gone viral in a new television advertisement shot as a “documentary” on the basketball courts in nearby Bloomfield. In the commercial, Irving attends a late night basketball game at Clark’s Pond in Bloomfield, dressed as paunchy old man, complete with white hair and beard. With his new persona as Uncle Drew, Irving is a curmudgeon with nothing but contempt for how the youth approach the game of basketball. Well, Irving gets his chance to …

St. Anthony's, St. Patrick's among high-profile hoops squads battling in a weekend tournament to help Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children.
Garden State basketball junkies will get the chance to watch some of the top talent from all over New Jersey and rub elbows with coaches from storied college programs — all while supporting a good cause. Kean University's Harwood Arena will once again host the 2012 Scholarship Fund for Inner City Children Invitational, the ninth annual showcase tournament for the state's parochial high school basketball programs. But this weekend, don't expect the spirit of philanthropy to trickle on the court as rivalries get renewed and the intense competition for regional hoops supremacy continues in a tournament that continues to draw the best teams and players in the state. Bill Fitzpatrick, the SFIC Tournament Director, knew that the event was …
