VIDEO: All-American 4th of July at Cleveland Birthplace

Fourth of July Ice Cream Social enjoyed by hundreds of Caldwell residents.

Hundreds of residents gathered on the lawn of the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Wednesday for the annual Fourth of July Ice Cream Social. In addition to old-fashioned games like ring toss and potato-sack races, families were treated to tours of the historic house, a magician and a flea circus. This year, the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Memorial Association held a Snickerdoodle Bake-off to find the best local recipe of a cookie believed to be a favorite of the 24th and 26th U.S. President. Julia Shannon took first prize in the competition out of 14 entries. Natasha Lachak, 10, won second place in the bake-off. Grillers: Need Some Last-Minute BBQ Ideas?

Here are some of Patch's favorite recipes for the perfect barbecue.

If the weather holds today, grillmasters throughout the Caldwells will be gearing up for a good old-fashioned cookout to celebrate the nation's 236th birthday. Here are some great, simple ideas for delectable open-fire fare: Barbecue Ribs: To barbecue means to slow-cook meat at a low temperature for a long time over wood or charcoal. In America, barbecue (or BBQ) originated in the late 1800s during Western cattle drives.  Blue Cheese Burgers make an easy July 4 treat. The good thing is this recipe requires only minutes to prepare. I was craving something different, something unique, I finally found it when a co-worker described a way of making burgers with crunched up potato chips, I was all ears. The chips are supposed to keep the meat …

Remember When?

Long-Awaited Summertime Performance a Major Trip

Memories of a 'shorts strike' and finally getting on stage at the fireworks display.

When I think of summer, I remember the time spent "down the shore" at Seaside Park or Seaside Heights, because usually, once school let out, I was outta here until after Labor Day. But there were times when our shore house was rented and I was up here in the sticks.  The memories range from super-nostalgic to just plain weird. In my sixth-grade summer—that is, the summer after sixth grade—my then common partner-in-crime Sam Lin and I briefly went on a "shorts strike." In "short," we were not gonna wear them, no matter how hot it got! Call it a bizarre social experiment or simply lunacy (you're getting warmer), but there we were, pretending to be immune to the blazing sun in hip-to-foot corduroy pants. We gave it up after a long bike ride …
